Opinion | Right-wing candidates are mocking Rash Israel today

2022-02-20T18:15:12.458Z

Justice Minister Saar has concocted a deal that will allow for broad agreement on the appointment of the four new Supreme Court justices • Despite the attempt to create an apparent balance by appointing two candidates from the right alongside two from the left, the activist left seems to have come out on top

The Judicial Appointments Committee is expected to approve tomorrow the appointments of four candidates for the Supreme Court: Khaled Kaboub, the first Muslim judge to serve on the Supreme Court;

Ruth Ronen, whose husband was a member of the New Israel Fund;

Adv. Yechiel Kasher, a representative of the Bar Association who is identified as a conservative; and Gila Kanfei Steinitz, the wife of Yuval Steinitz.

This is the end of a political deal that brewed, cooked up and succeeded Justice Minister Gideon Saar in order to find a solution that would allow for broad agreement.

There will be no broad agreement, MK Simcha Rotman, who serves as a committee member, expressed strong opposition and Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked also disagreed with the move, but it does not matter. closed.

As in all negotiations, in order to reach an agreement with the Supreme Court, Saar was forced to agree on two candidates from the opposite side.

Judge Kabov did not really fight.

This is a name that the Supreme Court has been trying to market for several years, it may not be a great Zionist but because of the retirement of Judge George Kara in May he entered the Arab Judge box and no one wanted to be portrayed as deleting this box from the Supreme Court judges. Many in the Economic Court contribute to his candidacy along with a bear hug from the Bar Association.

The struggle that should have been and was not is over Tel Aviv District Court Judge Ruth Ronen.

Ronen is considered a clear activist judge, her husband had a position in the New Israel Fund and she even received a petition filed by the "Gisha" organization supported by the fund, without disqualifying herself due to an alleged conflict of interest, ostensibly.

The Ombudsman for Public Complaints at the time, Eliezer Goldberg, found the complaint justified.

This is a red sheet for the entire conservative camp, which the Supreme has tried in the past to appoint without success.

Saar, for his part, does not see Ronen as a red sheet.

He even thinks he's an excellent judge.

But the problem continues with the "consideration," if you can call it that, that the conservative camp received because of the agreement on these candidates.

It is common to think that when a clear symbol of a very specific agenda enters, a symbol of the opposite camp will enter in return, in order to balance.

This is not the case.

The conservative camp was forced to give up the candidates it sought to transfer, and stormed its platoon in order to find "soft" candidates who would not provoke antagonism among the upper echelons.

And on whom did the parties agree?

Adv. Yechiel Kosher, who is considered conservative but far from being a man of freedom, and the judge revealed that Steinitz's wings are the only "proof" of her being conservative is the fact that she is the wife of Yuval Steinitz of the Likud. The committee issued its ruling in September 2018, in which it required Radio Kol Barama to put women on the air.

Attorney Kosher and Judge Steinitz may be talented people, but they fall short of the level and ability of Judges Kabov and Ronen and certainly in their motivation to promote values from the camp they come from.

Saar may have aimed for the good but performed it badly.

At the same time, he was forced to agree to a dictate from the Bar Association that was not counted at all in the Chaim era, and wonder of wonders - back to the arena for the deal.

There is no other way to describe Saar's negotiations in front of the upper and in front of the right but as a Turkish bazaar - and the right is the biggest loser than that.
