For weeks, Russian troops have been on the border with Ukraine.

Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin believes Russia is ready for an attack.

Putin's motive remains unclear.

Kiev – “You are now ready to strike”: According to US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Russia has created the military conditions for an attack on Ukraine in the Ukraine crisis*.

"Russia has been building up its armed forces in and around Ukraine for months, including in Belarus," the Pentagon chief said in Lithuania on Saturday (February 19).

"They unroll" and be ready.

The troops moved into the right positions to launch an attack.

Politicians fear an imminent attack by Russia on Ukraine - the danger is "anything but averted"

US Secretary of Defense Austin said he shares US President Joe Biden's assessment that Russian President Vladimir Putin* made his decision to invade Ukraine.

Biden had recently spoken of an invasion "in the next few days" in the Ukraine conflict.

The risk of an invasion is "very high." According to the United Nations, too, tensions in Ukraine are "higher than at any time since 2014." "War is looming again in Europe," warned Chancellor Olaf Scholz* at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday.

The danger of war in Europe is "anything but averted," he warned.

For weeks, a massive Russian troop deployment, numbering around 150,000 according to Western sources, has fueled fears of an invasion.

Russia denies possible attack plans.

Meanwhile, the situation in eastern Ukraine, where Ukrainian armed forces and pro-Russian militias have been fighting each other for eight years, is coming to a head.

Attacks, deaths and injuries are increasing here.

A peace plan from 2015 mediated by Franco-German mediation is not implemented.

Ukraine conflict: Politicians clueless about Putin's motive - "Actually he wants to prevent all this"

The situation is tense.

Nevertheless, during a visit to Lithuania, Austin emphasizes that conflict is “not inevitable” and that Putin can choose a different path.

“The United States, in lockstep with our allies and partners, has offered him the opportunity to seek a diplomatic solution.

We hope he accepts these," Austin said.

"We hope he steps back from the brink of conflict and we hope he de-escalates."

The US Secretary of Defense said diplomatic efforts should continue until the last minute, until they can no longer do so.

The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj had also campaigned for diplomatic solutions at the Munich Security Conference.

President Putin's motive is unclear.

It is considered possible that the Russian side wants to stir up fears in order to persuade NATO to make concessions on demands for new security guarantees.

US Secretary of State Tony Blinken expressed his incomprehension about Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin's motives.

He accelerated everything that Putin allegedly wanted to prevent, Blinken told the

Süddeutsche Zeitung

.

For example, the majority of Ukrainians have turned their backs on Russia and are now in favor of NATO membership.

And the strengthening of NATO is solely the result of Russia's "aggressive measures".

"He actually wants to prevent all of this - but now he's bringing it about." How did the crisis mode between Ukraine and Russia* come about?
