The sparrow took first place in the bird census “Hour of Winter Birds” in the district.

District

– At the beginning of the year, 604 participants counted for one hour each in 404 gardens and sometimes other areas in the Weilheim-Schongau district: The volunteers were supposed to determine how many birds of which species can be found there.

The State Association for the Protection of Birds (LBV) has now presented the results of the "Hour of Winter Birds".

It becomes clear: with house sparrows (sparrows), great tits and tree sparrows, which occupy places one to three in terms of numbers, the district is in line with the Bavarian trend, but can also offer a number of special features.

Formed the largest group at the "Hour of the Winter Birds" in the Weilheim-Schongau district: house sparrows.

However, the population is declining across Europe.

Was it really snipes?

Twelve Gadwall ducks were among the almost 13,000 sighted animals.

This bird species was only reported from seven districts in the Free State.

95 Gadwall ducks were included in the count across Bavaria.

"The observations of three snipes in the district are striking," says the report of the LBV regional office on the count.

"This is the only sighting of this bird species in Bavaria, which, as a migratory bird, is not usually with us in winter.

It may also be a mix-up with the similar little snipe.” But this migratory bird is also rarely found in Bavaria in January and has not been observed anywhere else.

Possibly seen in the county: snipes.

It would be the only sighting in Bavaria.

The LBV also mentions the sighting of 59 jackdaws, four goosanders, two kingfishers and ten great egrets as special features that were identified during the hands-on campaign in the district.

Regarding the latter, he said: "These slender white herons don't come into the gardens, but you can see them around Weilheim on the meadows, fields or in the wetlands."

Blackbird and blue tit in fourth and fifth place

Blackbirds, blue tits, chaffinches, magpies, bullfinches, greenfinches and siskins ranked fourth to tenth in the district count.

In eleventh place is a bird that, according to the LBV, has been sighted surprisingly often in Bavaria: the great spotted woodpecker.

"The black and white forest bird was reported from almost every second garden in Bavaria," according to the association.

One of the possible explanations for the comparatively frequent occurrence is a plentiful supply of bird feeders in the settlement area.

Great tits were the second most frequently counted.

A total of 76 bird species have been reported in the district.

There were an average of around 32 birds per garden/area – one fewer than the Bavarian average and eleven fewer than the Bavarian average ten years ago.

With 604 participants, there were 94 fewer than in the record year 2021, but 158 more than in 2020. From May 13th to 15th, those interested can again take part in a bird count: this time at the "Hour of Garden Birds" (Info: https://www .lbv.de/mitmachen/hour-der-gartenvoegel/).
