The presidents of the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, Denis Pushilin and Leonid Baschnik, appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin to recognize them as independent republics.

"We ask Russia to recognize the Donetsk People's Republic as an independent, democratic, legal and social state," Pushilin said in a televised speech today, on behalf of the people of the Donetsk People's Republic.

Pushilin stressed that the residents of Donbass feel the Russian spirit and their main goal is integration with Russia.

While Baschnik said in a similar speech, I ask President Putin to recognize the sovereignty and independence of the Luhansk People's Republic and conclude agreements of friendship and cooperation, including in the field of defense.

Paschnik announced that there was information about Kiev's preparation for a large-scale attack on Donbass.

In 2014, Ukraine witnessed a coup by extremists backed by the West against the elected legitimate government. They took a series of exclusionary measures, especially against citizens of Russian origin, which prompted the residents of Crimea to organize a referendum and declare independence, while the residents of Donetsk and Luhansk regions unilaterally declared independence.

Although the two sides of the crisis in Ukraine reached agreements in Minsk under the auspices of the Normandy Group in 2014 and 2015 to resolve the crisis through dialogue and implement a set of reciprocal steps, the Kiev authorities did not abide by them, encouraged by Western countries.

The Minsk Accords provide for a new constitutional reform requiring decentralization and the adoption of a permanent law to give the Donetsk and Lugansk regions special status.
