US President Joe Biden Speaks on Russian-Ukrainian Conflict (Reuters)

US President Joe Biden has agreed "in principle" to a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as long as the latter does not invade Ukraine, the White House said Monday night.

"We are committed to continuing diplomacy until the moment the invasion begins," White House spokeswoman Jen Saki said.

French President Emmanuel Macron helped mediate the potential summit after a day of talks.

Saki said that "we are always ready for diplomacy. We are also ready to impose quick and severe sanctions if Russia chooses war. And for now, it seems that Russia is continuing preparations for a large-scale attack on Ukraine very soon."

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov are due to meet in Europe on Thursday as long as no further invasion takes place.

Macron's office said that "intensive work will be carried out" that will allow a meeting "in the coming hours" to try to ensure a ceasefire in Donbas.

In an interview with CNN, Blinken said "everything we see indicates that it is completely serious" and that "we are on the verge of invasion. ".

At the same time, the Russian news agency RIA reported that the pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine said two civilians had been killed in Ukrainian army shelling.

Also, photos released by the American company Maxar, showed that near the border with Ukraine were deployed more Russian soldiers and additional armored equipment.

The developments join a report on the American network CBS, according to which Russian forces on the Ukrainian border have been ordered to advance in the invasion of Ukraine.

According to the report, which is based on estimates by US intelligence, field commanders are formulating specific plans for maneuvers on the battlefield.

Some 150,000 Russian troops are deployed along Ukraine's borders, including several tens of thousands in Belarus, and US President Joe Biden has said in recent days that he is convinced that Russian President Vladimir Putin has decided to attack Ukraine.

Yesterday he convened the National Security Council to discuss the crisis in Eastern Europe.

In addition, Moscow has warned that the repeated warnings and women issued by the West about its possible invasion of Ukraine are provocative and could lead to negative results.

"The daily exercise in announcing the date of Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a very bad practice," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned, referring to several deadlines in the West for the possible day Russia would attack Ukraine, which was formerly part of the Soviet Union.

Yesterday, Putin spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron, and the two agreed that it was necessary to find a solution to the conflict in the Donbass region, where the current round of fighting is on Wednesday, and to work for a ceasefire.

They agreed that representatives from Ukraine and Russia would attend today a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which oversees the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
