According to the annual data published by the Ministry of Health's Information Division, in March 2020-December 2021, the gross death rate was six percent higher than in the corresponding months in 2017-2019.

Among those aged 65 and over, the average in these months was four percent higher than in previous years.



According to the report, in 2021 the estimated age-standardized mortality rate was six percent higher than in 2019 - for women at four percent and for men at seven percent.

In 2020, the age-standardized mortality rate was three percent higher than in 2019 - one percent for women and five percent for men.

In 2017-2019, the number of deaths in January was 1.4 times higher than in August.

The report includes data on the common causes of death, according to which in the general population, in the years 2000-2019, the first cause of death is cancer, and heart disease is the second cause.

Whites aged 15-24, the first cause of death in 2017-2019 was accidents.

Among men aged 25-44 accidents are the second cause.

Among girls aged 15-24, accidents were the second cause in those years.



In general, in the years 2000-2019, the age-standardized mortality rate in Israel decreased by 29 percent for men and by 28 percent for females.

The age-standardized death rate in Israel is ranked third lowest out of 25 Western countries - second lowest for men and fourth lowest for women.

However, the mortality rate from sepsis in Israel is 4.7 times higher than the average of 15 Western European countries.

The rate of death from kidney disease is 2.7 times higher and the rate of deaths from unknown causes is 2.3 times higher than in Western European countries in 2018.

2.90 children on average per family

At the same time, the Central Bureau of Statistics published data on births and fertility in Israel in 2020. According to the data, 177,307 newborns were born in the said year, 51.4% of them boys and 48.6% girls.

This is a decrease of 3.8 percent compared to the peak year in the decade, 2018, and is common to all population groups that make up Israeli society.

The decline in the average daily birth rate continued in January 2021, but the trend has changed since February, since then there has been a steady increase compared to the same period in 2020: 7.3% in March, 11.8% in August and 8.1% in September.



In 2020, the report reveals, the total fertility rate was 2.90 children on average per family, a decrease compared to 2019, when the average number of children was 3.01.

In 2018 the average number was 3.09.

In ethnic segmentation, the fertility rate of Jewish women is the highest, at 3.0 children.

The fertility rate of Arab women stands at 2.82.

In 2020, for the first time, the fertility rate of Muslim women fell below 3.0 and stands at 2.99.



The city with the highest fertility rate is Modi'in Illit, where the average number of children in 2020 was 7.16.

The lowest rate of children was recorded in the locality of Kabul, where it stood at 1.56 children per woman.
