The crisis in Ukraine tipped into the unknown on Monday evening - or, more likely, into the all too well-known clash of arms and its sinister procession of human pain.
The reasons Vladimir Putin gave for his decision to recognize the independence of the pro-Russian separatist republics of Donbass sounded like a declaration of war: Ukraine, that invention of Lenin, is a puppet of the West, an American colony corrupt which persecutes its Russian-speaking minority and could even, tomorrow, possess weapons of mass destruction… In short, an intolerable danger for Russia.
