(CNN Business) --

It's no surprise that anyone looking to leave their current job for a new one wants a position that offers better pay and work-life balance.

But what may be surprising is how much more of these issues drive a person's decision to change jobs today than they were a few years ago, according to a new Gallup study that included more than 13,000 US employees.

The last time Gallup conducted a similar poll was in 2015.

  • Employers take note: Most remote workers don't want to go back to the office

Employers looking to win the war for talent shortages in the coming year should consider these six factors as the basic expectations of their potential hires.

They must also aim to satisfy these conditions when trying to attract, or keep, the best employees.

"A compelling job posting ... will probably need to address most of these attributes in attracting (and keeping) people in your workplace," said Ben Wigert, Gallup's director of workplace management research and strategy. a report on the results of the survey.

In order of importance, employees said that if they were looking for a job today they would prioritize:

1. Compensation

The study found that the top factor for respondents in a new role is a "significant increase in income or benefits," which 64% cited as very important.

That represents a 41% increase in 2015, when "revenue or profit" was fourth on their list of priorities.

"A key reason for this change is that employees know they are now in a market that is looking for employees," said Wigert.

2. Work-life balance for workers

The category "work-life balance and well-being" also increased in importance: 61% of current respondents say these factors are "very important" compared to 53% in 2015.

  • These companies chose to work remotely, definitely

"Even for employees who don't experience burnout, the significant increase in remote work has raised awareness of the value of flexible work options. Alternatives that are largely here to stay," Wigert said.

3. Opportunity to build on your strengths

58% of those surveyed said it was important to find a position that "allows them to do what they do best."

"Recruiters should go the extra mile to understand what really excites a candidate about their job. Recruiters should also provide a realistic preview of the job: what the daily routine will be like, who they'll be working with, and what they're expected to do." do," Wigert recommended.

4. Occupational safety of workers

Some things never change.

The 2015 survey and the most recent survey had the same percentage of participants (53%) who said they would seek job security and stability if they changed jobs.

Given the staggering instability that individuals, employers, and industries have experienced during the pandemic, it's hard to know exactly how broad the definition of stability currently is for job seekers.

But, Wigert stressed, "After two years of living with daily uncertainties about our health, the economy and what we want our jobs to look like in the future, it's important for employers to present themselves as a stabilizing force that workers can count on in the future." difficult and harsh situations".

5. Vaccination policies that align with your beliefs

Good luck with this, as there can be quite a sharp dichotomy in beliefs around vaccination mandates.

However, 43% of respondents said it was important for a new employer to have COVID-19 policies that align with their own views.

Gallup noted that the poll was conducted before the US Supreme Court struck down President Joe Biden's federal vaccination mandate.

6. Diversity and inclusion

There is no direct comparison to 2015 on the importance of the topic of diversity and inclusion for job seekers.

This is because this option was not included in the previous survey.

But this time, 42% of people mentioned it as a very important factor.

  • A record number of Americans left their jobs in 2021

Employees want real change, not platitudes, when it comes to a company's continued commitment to diversifying its workforce and leadership and creating a culture of inclusion for all, Wigert said.

"Recruiters need to be prepared to discuss those changes and compromises," she added.

Tailor your approach to workers

While the six factors listed here are generally important to all US job seekers today, some may be more relevant than others depending on the job seeker's industry, skills, or location.

Therefore, Wigert advises employers to pay attention to what their top performers most appreciate about working at the organization, or what they would most like to do.

This way they can learn how they present what the company has to offer to potential future hires.

"Now is the time to look inside your organization and ask yourself: are your top candidates interested in what you have to offer?"

Gallup's poll was conducted between October 16 and 28, 2021. The 13,085 respondents were a nationally representative random group of full-time and part-time employees ages 18 and older.

The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 1 percentage point at the 95% confidence level.
