The traffic light coalition has already laid down the increase in the minimum wage to twelve euros in the government program, according to Labor Minister Hubertus Heil it should now become reality.

Berlin - The SPD has been dealing with this topic for a long time - now it should really come: increasing the minimum wage to twelve euros.

At least that's what Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil* announces in an interview with the

Tagesspiegel

.

Traffic light coalition on the offensive?

Minimum wage plan is in place

According to him, the traffic light government wants the increase in the minimum wage to be (almost) dry as early as Wednesday.

Heil was confident "that we will get this started next week and that the cabinet will decide on Wednesday." He firmly rejects the fear that the increase could be eaten up again by inflation.

"The higher minimum wage puts more money in the wallets of many hard-working people," said the Minister of Labor.

While he acknowledged that the current increases were worrying people.

However, the traffic light coalition will do everything to relieve households and citizens.

The increase in the minimum wage to twelve euros means a wage increase of up to 22 percent for those affected, Heil told the

Tagesspiegel

.

More than six million employees would benefit from this.

Hubertus Heil (SPD): Traffic light plan to be implemented - soon minimum wage increase?

If the traffic light plan is actually decided on Wednesday, the minimum wage will rise to 10.45 euros on July 1, 2022, and then to twelve euros from October 1.

This was also agreed in the coalition agreement.

Roughly speaking, women and East Germans could particularly benefit from this, says Heil, but also people in gastronomy, in service occupations, warehouse logistics and cleaning staff without a collective agreement.

“It's about people who kept the shop running during the pandemic.

For whom it would be quite cynical if it would just stop at mere applause," Heil confirms.

The minimum wage of twelve euros is therefore "a question of respect and fairness of performance" that is close to the heart of the coalition, even if the traffic light is currently being demanded on climate issues.

Traffic light coalition: Planned increase in the minimum wage - trade union confederation positive

The German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) also sees the planned increase as an important pillar for the economy.

"The higher minimum wage will strengthen the purchasing power of the economy as a whole - extrapolated to around 4.8 billion euros per year," said DGB board member Stefan Körzell to the newspapers of the Funke media group.

"In times of pandemic-related economic slumps, this is an important pillar of the economy, because a large part of the additional income will flow back directly into the economic cycle." The higher minimum wage would also make it affordable and protect social security, says Körzell.

The special evaluation by the Federal Statistical Office on behalf of the DGB has also shown that women in particular benefit from the minimum wage survey.

Almost one in five of them currently works for an hourly wage of less than twelve euros.

With 3.5 million female employees, 56.6 percent of the previous minimum wage earners would have more money in their pockets from October.

Minimum wage: increase by traffic light coalition - many employees could benefit

According to the data, 21.6 percent of those employed in eastern Germany would have more money at their disposal with a higher minimum wage - that's 1.08 million employees.

In West Germany, almost every seventh employee would benefit, at 5.11 million.

According to the report by the Funke media group, trade and car repair shops would have to pay 1.27 million employees higher wages in the future.

Around 660,000 employees in the catering industry will also receive a wage increase with the planned increase - this corresponds to 60.3 percent of all employees in the hospitality industry.

More than half a million employees would also benefit in health and social services.

But a large part of the coalition forces seems to be bundled in the Ukraine crisis.

Economics Minister Habeck warns of massive consequences for Germany in the event of a Russian invasion.
