Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered troops to be sent to eastern Ukraine.

The units are supposed to ensure peace in the "People's Republics of Luhansk and Donetsk," which Moscow now recognizes as independent states.

This emerges from a decree that the head of the Kremlin signed in Moscow on Monday, and which the dpa and Reuters news agencies report unanimously.
