 (CNN Spanish) --

The wife of Juan Orlando Hernández, former president of Honduras, presented this Monday before the National Commissioner for Human Rights (Conadeh) a complaint for alleged violation of the former president's rights during his arrest and subsequent presentation to the media of communication on Tuesday, February 15 in Tegucigalpa.

Former first lady Ana García de Hernández affirmed that "the detention process was carried out under degrading and inhumane actions," according to a document that she published on her Facebook account on Saturday and that was delivered to the Honduran ombudsman, Blanca Izaguirre, on Monday. .

"(They subjected) my husband, Juan Orlando Hernández Alvarado —who was filmed by all the cameras of the same security forces at the time of his arrest— to the imposition of chains and shackles, later presenting him at the police headquarters to the media, on a platform as a trophy to be exhibited and in the presence of the highest authorities of the National Police," he added.

García de Hernández said after filing the complaint that she hopes the National Human Rights Commissioner will investigate the abuses that she says were committed against her husband.

For her part, the ombudsman assured that this body will make a visit to the center where the former president is detained to verify the complaint of the former first lady and make the necessary recommendations in case the individual guarantees of the former president are being violated.

Former President Hernández was arrested after an extradition request from the United States justice system, where he faces charges of drug trafficking.

The former president has repeatedly denied the charges and has said that, while he was president, his government collaborated with the United States in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime.

Hernández was arrested last Tuesday at his home in Tegucigalpa after an arrest warrant was issued.

Upon being taken into custody, he was handcuffed hand and foot, wearing a bulletproof vest and was escorted by members of the Honduran National Police.

Hernández was later presented to the National Directorate of Special Forces of that country, a measure usually used by the Honduran Police when dealing with high-profile cases.

CNN made a request to the Honduran National Police about the former first lady's complaint, but no response has been received so far.

The entity then indicated in a statement that the capture of the former president had been a success and that "the police protocol had been followed to guarantee the safety of the now detained person, as well as his family."

In her complaint filed with Conadeh, García de Hernández added that she demanded that the State of Honduras guarantee respect and protection for her husband "in accordance with international treaties, constitutional regulations and other laws of the Republic."

The former president is still detained in the National Directorate of Special Forces of the Honduran Police awaiting a new hearing that will take place on March 16 as part of the extradition process.
