A Florida woman has been charged with murder after police accused her of allegedly stabbing her husband more than 140 times.

Joan Burke, 61, is being held without bond and appeared before a Palm Beach County judge Sunday via video conference, according to court documents obtained by CNN affiliate WPTV.

CNN has contacted Burke's attorney for comment.

In an incident report, Palm Springs police officers reported that they went to Burke's home on the night of Feb. 11 after receiving a call from a man who identified himself as the suspect's son.

The caller said he came home after work to discover the body of his stepfather, Melvin Weller, 62, lying on the kitchen floor in a pool of blood.

When asked by the 911 operator if anyone else was home at the time, the man "paused for several seconds and then said his mother Joan Burke was there," according to the report.

Joan Burke was arrested in Palm Springs, Florida.

When officers arrived, they found the victim in a large pool of blood that covered more than half of the kitchen floor, according to the report.

Investigators also found a mop, broom and other cleaning supplies next to the body.

Police said the victim, who appeared to be dead, had multiple stab wounds and lacerations to his body.

Agents observed blood splatters and stains on the kitchen walls, cabinets, and countertops.

A pair of knives and a meat cleaver were found in the kitchen sink, police said.

During a search of the home, officers discovered Burke lying on a bed in the master bedroom, conscious and alert but silent, the report said.

She was transferred to a nearby hospital for evaluation of her.

The autopsy revealed that the victim suffered more than 140 stab wounds and a skull fracture caused by being hit to the head with a meat cleaver, according to the report.

In a search warrant executed at the suspect's home, police were able to recover a trash bag containing a blood-stained nightgown belonging to the woman and a mobile phone that investigators believe belonged to the victim, according to the report.

Police said Burke also had lacerations on his hands.

The reason for this incident is still unknown.

The victim's family said the man was physically incapacitated at the time of his death.
