Vladimir Putin delivers a memorable speech in Moscow that will probably go down in history.

He blames the US and savagely attacks Ukraine.

Munich/Moscow - Political observers had expected on Monday that the Russian President would recognize the political independence of the pro-Russian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk from Ukraine.

But what happened on the evening of February 21 in the Moscow Kremlin - probably not.

The almost hour-long TV speech seemed like a history lesson.

Vladimir Putin* spoke about the Soviet Union, which was founded on "historical Russia".

Ultimately, only the supposedly "aggressive nationalists" from Ukraine were to blame for the collapse of the huge Soviet empire.

Those same political observers then tried to classify what they had seen.

In the ARD talk show host Frank Plasberg discussed in "Hart aber fair" at prime time that Putin had isolated himself and lost touch with reality.

Vladimir Putin's TV speech: The most amazing statements by the President of Russia

• Nuclear weapons:

  Vladimir Putin claimed in his TV speech that Kiev is working on the development of strategic nuclear weapons.

  From Soviet stocks there are still the necessary devices in the Ukraine.

  “They still have the basics from the Soviet era.

  It will be easier for them to make strategic nuclear weapons," he said, adding, "We cannot ignore this real danger."

• Ukraine is stealing from Russia*

  :

  His country has “repaid all of the Soviet debts,” Putin explained, adding with regard to Ukraine: “Instead of a partnership, there was exploitation, which was sometimes quite shameless.

  There was blackmail for energy and simply a theft for gas.” Moscow has always supported Kiev economically, but has never met with thanks.

• Ukraine is planning terrorist attacks and kidnapping Russian citizens*

  : Putin spoke of an alleged "smuggling of terrorists" in the Donbass and of the fact that "Russian citizens" were being kidnapped.

  Ukraine is planning an "underground in the Donbass" with terrorist structures.

  US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently warned in the UN Security Council that Vladimir Putin could make such claims.

• NATO military base and US colony:

  Ukraine is in fact "a foreign military base," Putin said in his spectacular speech.

  Striking: Putin repeatedly turned against the United States: "Okay, you don't want us as friends.

  But why are you making enemies of us?

  They don't need such a large independent country as Russia.

  That is the source of American policy towards Russia.” Ukraine is nothing more than a “US colony” with a “puppet government” in Kiev, the 69-year-old Prime Minister further claimed.

  Among other things, Putin spoke about the airfield in southern Ukraine's Odessa, through which NATO troops can easily be transported to Russia.

  He also reported that Ukraine and its allies could launch medium-range missiles from Ukraine "that would be in Moscow in four or five minutes".

• NATO deceived Russia:

  NATO's eastward expansion is the accession of states of the former Warsaw Pact and former Yugoslavia to the transatlantic defense alliance NATO.

  In five integration steps since 1999, these include Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Baltic states as well as Romania and Bulgaria on the Black Sea coast close to Russia.

  In his speech, Putin called for the old borders “from 1997” to be restored.

  That would mean that NATO as a whole would have to give up its loyalty to 14 member states in Eastern and Southeastern Europe.

• Ukraine actually belongs to Russia*

  In his speech, Putin looked back historically to the time of the Bolsheviks.

  He called it a mistake that the constituent republics had broken away from the Soviet Union at the time.

  Among other things, the "aggressive nationalists" in Ukraine were responsible for this.

  “Russia did everything to preserve the territorial unity of Ukraine.

  Everything was in vain,” said Putin.

  And said elsewhere: "Why did one have to give such big gifts?

  That the republics leave the common state.

  It sounds crazy.” In other words: Putin apparently still sees a claim by Russia on Ukraine, which the international community around Chancellor Olaf Scholz immediately denied.
