In Offenbach, a pedestrian dies in mid-February when a car hits her at a zebra crossing.

Now it comes out: The crossing had no clearance.

Update from Tuesday, February 22nd, 2022, 9.30 a.m .:

In the case of the pedestrian who was killed on Kaiserleistrasse in Offenbach, there are findings that put the tragic accident in a new light.

Apparently, the pedestrian crossing that the young woman wanted to cross in the dark and was hit by an electric car had not yet been released by the road traffic authorities.

Immediately after the accident, the city of Offenbach had a temporary traffic light set up there, conspicuously pasted over the white zebra crossing with yellow stripes and thus rendered it ineffective.

Garbage bags were put over the crossing signs.

An effort that also seemed strange to reader Michael Kreienberg.

"In fact, the invalidation of the recently installed zebra crossing seems like a kind of structural admission." He himself goes there almost every day and knows that the spot in front of the bridge without daylight, like the entire Kaiserleistraße, is particularly dark and poorly lit.

Fatal accident in Offenbach: zebra crossing was "not yet approved"

Confronted with this, city spokeswoman Kerstin Holzheimer admits: "The pedestrian crossing has not yet been completed and has not been approved by the road traffic authority." The administration commissioned a construction company to build a pedestrian crossing there.

A temporary pedestrian traffic light was also installed during the work.

According to the city, an on-site meeting with the construction company was planned for February 18, two days after the accident.

But: "Obviously, the temporary traffic light has been removed in the meantime, although it should have remained in place until the complete pedestrian crossing was completed," says Holzheimer.

"Why this was the case is currently being investigated." In any case, the city already knew before the accident that "the lighting had not yet been installed due to long delivery times and for this reason the zebra crossing had not yet been released." According to Holzheimer, it served to secure the crossing as quickly as it was set up again and the signs were covered.

Meanwhile, according to police spokeswoman Andrea Ackermann, the result of the driver's blood alcohol test is still not available.

According to the police, he had shown “the first signs of alcoholism” at the scene of the accident.
