The Prime Minister also called on elected officials to grant their sponsorship to candidates in difficulty, evoking there “a deeply democratic subject”.

The situation has now shifted to “

emergency

”.

Ten days from the end of the collection of sponsorships, many candidates are still far from 500 signatures, including candidates whose weight in the polls is significant.

Questioned this Tuesday during the last session of questions to the government of this legislature, Jean Castex recognized "

a deeply democratic subject

".

In addition to calling on mayors to sponsor, the Prime Minister said he was inviting associations of local elected officials to a meeting scheduled for Thursday.

The candidates themselves have sounded the alarm several times.

At this stage, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Marine Le Pen and Eric Zemmour - all above the 10% mark in the polls - have not yet reached the 500 signature mark, and may not.

In the hemicycle on Tuesday, MoDem MP Élodie Jacquier-Laforge spoke of an "

" scenario in which "

Sponsorships "down" compared to 2017

The question is “

extremely important since it affects the functioning of our democracy

”, replied Jean Castex, assuring in the preamble that there is “

obviously no question of modifying (the rule) when the presidential election is very close

”.

But the observation is shared by the tenant of Matignon: “

no one and certainly not democracy can be satisfied

” with the current state of things.

I say this solemnly, regardless of the candidates concerned

,” he insisted.

To remedy this situation, the Prime Minister first welcomed the initiatives already launched, such as the bank of sponsorships for François Bayrou, or the sponsorship granted to Jean-Luc Mélenchon by the LR mayor of Cannes, David Lisnard .

Jean Castex also wanted to launch an appeal to elected officials himself “

by telling them quite simply: the fact of granting sponsorship to a candidate is not automatically synonymous with political support.

It is also a democratic act.

According to him, “

to date only 10,000 of the 42,000 elected officials able to sponsor have done so.

It is in reduction compared to the previous election

“, during which approximately elected had lent themselves to the exercise.

", the Prime Minister invites all the associations of local elected officials to a meeting, "

as president of the President of the National Assembly and the President of the Senate who have accepted to join (his) invitation

".

They will be received Thursday morning to discuss "

this situation with respect for everyone's freedom

".
