With a view to the Ukraine conflict, Turkish President Recep Erdogan criticizes Western crisis diplomacy and lashes out against Olaf Scholz and Emmanuel Macron.

Ankara - In the escalating conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Turkey and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are under pressure.

The NATO member maintains good diplomatic relations with both Ukraine and Russia.

On the one hand, Ankara relies on Russian gas supplies and has a “very advanced” relationship with Moscow.

On the other hand, Turkey sells combat drones to the government in Kiev.

Armaments that could be used in the flaring conflict in eastern Ukraine.

For this reason too, Erdogan called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Wednesday and advised him that a worsening of the conflict in eastern Ukraine would do no one any good.

This emerges from a statement by the Turkish Presidential Office on Wednesday.

However, it also states that Turkey does not recognize any steps directed against the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.

Erdogan was reacting to Putin's recognition of the so-called People's Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk on Monday.

While Erdogan refrained from direct criticism of the Russian President, the Turkish head of state saw serious failings in Western crisis-democracy, referring above all to Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron.

"Everyone just talks, nobody does anything," the state news agency Anadolu quoted the Turkish president as saying on Wednesday.

Scholz and Macron were in Moscow and US President Joe Biden also always talked about talks with Russia.

"But nothing came of it," said Erdogan.

It is now up to NATO to do something about the conflict.

However, the Turkish President left open the steps he was alluding to with his demand.

However, Ankara remains caught between the chairs in the Ukraine conflict.

Erdogan announced to Anadolu that neither partner would be given up.

In the phone call, the 67-year-old invited Putin again for talks in Turkey.
