Munich - The Swedish fashion group
H&M
wants to open what is probably Germany's largest flagship store at Kaufingerstraße 22 in Munich.
The fashion store Esprit was housed there, among other things.
H&M at Kaufingerstraße 18 would be closed.
The sales area is already rented.
The opening of the new store is planned for mid-2023.
The store has a total area of 4,500 square meters and a sales area of 3,800 square meters.
New H&M in Munich: Verdi union fears layoffs
In addition to the planned flagship store on Kaufingerstrasse, H&M has another store in Munich on Weinstrasse.
According to the company, all employees are to be taken over from the current branch.
The Verdi union expresses its displeasure.
"Since there are many branches in the city center, the preservation of the current jobs will be a big issue here," says Stephanie Gebhart-Gill from Verdi.
"Closings of smaller shops are therefore to be feared."
Economics officer Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU): "That shouldn't make a school"
As early as 2019, the company closed a branch at the Frauenkirche and denied the 100 people affected alternative jobs in neighboring branches, even though there were enough vacancies.
Munich's economics officer Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU) wants to intervene.
"It must be in the interest of the company to keep its employees." Otherwise it would not be a good signal for the employees in downtown Munich.
He will contact H&M to question the plans.
If more branches are really closed and employees are laid off, H&M will cut itself in the foot.
"That shouldn't make school."
In the middle of Munich, FC Bayern is also presenting itself with a mega project.
But the FC Bayern fan shop in downtown Munich divided opinion: "A highlight of tastelessness."
