The table of the Congress of Deputies has selected the first topics on which the new Office of Science and Technology will carry out advisory reports: green hydrogen as fuel, artificial intelligence and health, advances against cancer and cybersecurity.
In the coming months, the Office will collect scientific and technological evidence, following a working method based on the review and contextualization of scientific literature, interviews with experts, review by other scientists and technologists, and a multidisciplinary approach.
In total, 17 issues of potential relevance for Spain in the medium term were raised.
These were proposed by the Office in collaboration with its Advisory Council, which includes representatives of the main national research institutions, organizations and associations.
The topics raised were grouped into four main areas: climate change and energy, biomedicine and health, biological solutions for major challenges and digital society.
All of them had a brief summary and an evaluation of the moment in which the topic will be of special relevance for Spain, of the amount of existing scientific-technical evidence, of its potential to open new public debates and of its scope.
The issues suggested were, among others, artificial light in the night environment, preservation of the soil as an ecosystem, antimicrobial resistance and potential therapies, indoor air quality, the aging process and health, education in digital age or neuroscience, its applications and ethical implications.
The Office is in charge of preparing, in an impartial and independent manner, reports that include the scientific and technical consensus on prospective topics of interest to deputies, publishing them and making them accessible to the general public as well.
The idea of creating a scientific and technical advice office in the Congress of Deputies arose in 2018 at the proposal of the citizen initiative Science in Parliament with the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).
