Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that the presidents of the Donetsk and Lugansk republics have asked President Vladimir Putin to help repel the aggression of Ukrainian forces on their territories.

Russia Today quoted Peskov as saying in a press statement this evening that he had received two letters of request to President Putin from the President of the Donetsk People's Republic Denis Pushilin and the President of the Lugansk People's Republic Leonid Pasichnik, asking the Russian President to help repel the aggression of the Ukrainian armed forces and formations on the basis of the two articles The 3rd and 4th of the Agreements of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the Russian Federation on the one hand and the two republics on the other, against the background of the situation that has formed so far and with the aim of preventing civilian casualties and a humanitarian catastrophe.

Peskov added that Pushilin and Pasichnik stressed in their letters that the citizens of the two republics are forced against the background of the escalation of the situation and threats from Kiev to leave their homes while the process of evacuating them to Russia continues, pointing out that in light of the continuous military aggression by the Ukrainian armed forces, the two republics are witnessing the destruction of civilian and industrial infrastructure Schools, hospitals, kindergartens and, worst of all, civilians, including children, were killed.

In their letters, Pushilin and Pasichnik indicated that Kiev continues to increase its military presence on the line of combat contact and nevertheless receives full support, including military, from the United States of America and other Western countries, stressing that the regime in Kiev seeks a military solution to the situation in Donbass.

Last Monday, the Russian President signed two decrees requiring Russia to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics from Ukraine, against the backdrop of an ongoing military-political crisis in the Donbass region since 2014.

Putin also concluded with the presidents of Donetsk and Lugansk, Denis Pushilin and Denis Pacenik, two agreements of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance, according to which he directed the Russian armed forces to carry out tasks of ensuring peace in its territory.
