The Non-Aligned Movement expressed its deep concern over the imposition of unilateral embargo measures by some parties on developing countries, calling for an immediate end to this.
The Iranian Fars news agency quoted Iranian Ambassador and Assistant Permanent Representative to the United Nations Zahra Ershadi as saying in a speech she delivered on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement before the Sixth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, “The imposition of laws and other forms of coercive measures in the economic field against developing countries, including measures The unilateral embargo is a violation of the Charter of the United Nations and a weakening of international laws and the laws of the World Trade Organization.”
"The movement believes that the United Nations has a pivotal and vital role in deciding on issues related to international cooperation, economic development, social progress, peace and security, human rights and the rule of law based on dialogue and cooperation, and therefore it requests all Member States to strengthen their commitment to the United Nations Charter by respecting its principles such as Refraining from the threat or use of force, respecting territorial integrity, and resolving and settling disputes by peaceful means.
Irshidi indicated that the movement expects the embargo committees of the Security Council to provide more in-kind assessments about the method used to assess the humanitarian repercussions of the embargo measures and the short and long-term social, economic and humanitarian repercussions against countries, pointing out that international embargo regimes must avoid creating repercussions in the target country or countries. Others could lead to a violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms and prevent humanitarian aid from reaching civilians.
