Tonight, Russia invaded Ukraine and launched an offensive over large areas of the country.

President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia will hold a "special military operation" in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.

At the same time, loud explosions and gunfire were heard in Kiev and other cities in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zalansky said Russia had attacked with missiles infrastructure and border posts and called on residents to stay in their homes.

The Interfax news agency reported that Russian soldiers had landed in the port cities of Odessa and Mariupol.

Ukraine has declared a military regime.

The Ukrainian army later claimed that the air force was "thwarting an air strike" and denied the report that Russian forces had landed in Odessa.

Subsequently, reports of a Russian attack were also received through the border with Belarus, which is 225 kilometers from the capital Kiev.

The Ukrainian Border Police announced that the attack began from the direction of Belarus in the north, and from the Crimean peninsula, from the south, during which units and border crossings were attacked with artillery and heavy equipment.

The Ukrainian army claims that the air defense systems shot down a Russian plane in the east of the country.

Russia's Defense Ministry claims that the forces are attacking Ukrainian military infrastructure with precision weapons, and denies that it is attacking cities in Ukraine with missiles and artillery.

Putin noted that his intention is not to occupy Ukraine, but to overthrow it.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kolba announced that "the invasion has begun" and said: "Defend ourselves and we will win."

At the same time, pro-Russian separatists in the Donetsk Oblast also declared a widespread attack on Ukrainian forces in the province.
