Women's carnival in Cologne: Several hundred people gathered on the Neumarkt - not to celebrate, but to demonstrate against the war in Ukraine.

Cologne – carnival hustle and bustle in the city and at the same time concern for the world situation and the victims of the war in Ukraine.

On the Neumarkt in Cologne, both met on Weiberfastnacht: people who were protesting against the Ukraine conflict and Jecke, who actually wanted to celebrate, as 24RHEIN reports.

Several hundred people gathered at the Neumarkt, wrapped in Ukrainian and European flags, in between costumed carnivalists who spontaneously joined the demonstration against the Ukraine war.

The "Blue-Yellow Cross", a German-Ukrainian association based in the cathedral city, had called under the motto "Solidarity with Ukraine".

Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker also took part in the event.

Linda Mai, chairwoman of the German-Ukrainian association on 24RHEIN: "Immediately after the attack, we decided that night to take to the streets in Cologne and other cities, if the police allowed it.

Our friends and relatives, our homes are being bombed, people are dying.”

  • On the Neumarkt, demonstrators called for, among other things, significantly tougher sanctions against Russia, defensive weapons for Ukraine and a military peacekeeping mission by the United Nations

  • In addition to minutes of silence for the victims of the conflict, calls of "Solidarity with Ukraine" and "Putin's murderer" echoed again and again.

One of the demonstrators, Tamara Vukovic from Cologne, who comes from Ukraine: "I usually like to be part of the carnival, but seeing the revelers today was very difficult for me." On the cancellation of the Shrove Monday procession in the stadium by the Cologne Carnival Festival Committee she: "That's very nice and a great support." (
