After Germany, the British government is now considering steps against the Russian foreign broadcaster RT.

In Turkey, meanwhile, the German broadcaster DW is under pressure.

London – The British government wants to do the same as Germany and take action against the Russian broadcaster RT in Great Britain.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced in Parliament on Wednesday that he had asked his culture secretary, Nadine Dorries, to apply for a review of RT's broadcasting license from the relevant regulator, Ofcom.

Ukraine crisis: Johnson wants to check the broadcasting license of the Russian broadcaster RT in Great Britain

As the Ukraine crisis continues to escalate, Johnson wants to consider revoking the Russian broadcaster's license.

RT is considered the Kremlin's international propaganda tool.

However, the Prime Minister stressed that it was important for Ofcom to make the broadcast license decision and not for politicians to decide on media admissions "as is done in Russia".

Britain is "a country that believes in freedom of expression," Johnson said.

RT broadcast ban in UK?

Moscow threatens countermeasures against BBC

The licensing authority has already announced that it will give priority to the investigation in view of the serious crisis in Ukraine.

Moscow reacted soberly to the announcement from London and promised countermeasures against the British broadcaster BBC.

"If Britain carries out its threat against the British medium, countermeasures will not be long in coming," said Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

The Kremlin behaved in a similar way at the beginning of February, when the German Commission for Approval and Supervision (ZAK) of the media authorities banned the broadcaster RT DE from broadcasting.

In response to this step, the office of Deutsche Welle (DW) in Moscow had to close.

In Turkey, too, Deutsche Welle's online service is now threatened with extinction.

The Turkish Broadcasting Authority has asked DW and other foreign broadcasters to apply for a license for their on-demand offerings in Turkey.

According to DW Director Peter Limbourg, this measure does not only refer to formal aspects of the program, but would also entail restrictions in terms of content.

DW defends itself against Turkish demands and speaks of "censorship"

"It gives the Turkish authorities the opportunity to block the entire offer based on individual, critical reports if these reports are not deleted.

This would open up the possibility of censorship,” Limbourg said on Tuesday.

One will therefore lodge an objection and also go to Turkish courts.

The Turkish cyber rights activist Yaman Akdeniz also spoke to the German Press Agency of a "serious political interference with editorial independence" that the licensing would result in.

The request to apply for a license is based on a law from 2019, with which the Turkish government had expanded its control over national internet platforms.

In addition to national offers, the regulation is now to be extended to international offers such as DW.
