The British Prime Minister chaired a morning crisis meeting in Downing Street and promised a “

decisive

” response to the invasion launched by the Russian army.

"

This is a disaster for our continent

," he tweeted.

He indicated that he was going to address the British.

I will also talk to other G7 leaders and call for an emergency meeting of all NATO leaders as soon as possible

,” he added.

He will speak in Parliament at 17:00 GMT.

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, James Cleverly, indicated that London was preparing, in cooperation with the West, “

sanctions of an unprecedented level to punish this aggression

”.

The United Kingdom had sanctioned five banks and three Russian oligarchs on Tuesday after Moscow recognized the independence of the pro-Russian separatist regions of eastern Ukraine.

These measures had been criticized by some elected officials as too weak given the scale of the current crisis.

While it has taken a tough stance on Moscow in this crisis, the British government has at the same time been accused of turning a blind eye for years to the origin of Russian money flowing into London.
