A young woman left her home in an Uber and died after being dropped off at a hospital. New Orleans authorities are investigating.

New Orleans police are investigating the death of a college student who died shortly after being dropped off at a hospital.

Ciaya Whetstone, 21, arrived at the medical center shortly before 7:00 am on Saturday "via private transport," according to a police statement.

She was pronounced dead shortly after being admitted.

"The incident is still being investigated as an unclassified death," authorities said.

Hours before his death, Whetstone had attended carnival parades in Metairie, his friends told the local newspaper The Times-Picayune.

The University of New Orleans student then went to a few bars with her friends before another friend took her back to her boyfriend's house, according to the newspaper.

On Saturday morning, Whetstone took an Uber to her apartment so she could see her dog.

According to her roommate Reese White, when Whetstone arrived at her house to take care of her pet, she told her that the Uber driver who had taken her was waiting for her because they were going to get her car.

"I tried to talk her out of it," White said.

Police have not said who left Whetstone in the hospital.

Uber said the driver's account has been deactivated and they have launched their own investigation.

"Our thoughts are with the family of Ciaya Whetstone as they mourn the loss of their daughter. We stand ready to assist law enforcement in their investigation," a spokesperson said.

Whetstone was a first-year business administration student at the University of New Orleans.

"As a University, few things are more difficult than dealing with the sadness of the death of a student. Our thoughts are with Ciaya's family and friends. We are offering counseling services to students and employees who need support," said the university president, John Nicklow.
