Kiev - The long-dreaded nightmare scenario has come to pass: the war in Ukraine began on Thursday night, and a state of emergency prevails in Eastern Europe.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had announced a "military operation" and ordered attacks on the neighboring country.

In the early morning, the first violent explosions could be heard in the capital Kiev and the port cities of Mariupol and Odessa.

The Ukrainian border guard reported artillery fire on both the border with Russia and Belarus.

According to their own statements, the Russian armed forces completely disabled the country's air defense system during the invasion of Ukraine.

The Defense Ministry announced on Thursday in Moscow that the bases of the Ukrainian air force had been put out of action with “precision-guided ammunition”.

The Ukrainian soldiers did not offer any resistance to the Russian military, it was said.

They even claim to have observed the jump of Russian paratroopers.

Belarusian propaganda channels on Telegram in particular published photos and videos on Thursday night and wrote, among other things, about alleged rocket attacks on Kiev and Kharkiv.

A reporter from the German Press Agency in Kiev reported that there was an air raid alarm in the city.

The first people left the city area, but there was initially no major panic.

There were reports in the Ukrainian media of strikes in eastern Ukraine from the cities of Kharkiv and Dnipro, as well as from Odessa, Berdyansk and Kramatorsk, according to the state news agency Ukrinform.
