The UN humanitarian affairs chief says they will not leave Ukraine and have set up an operations center in Geneva.

The United Nations humanitarian presence will remain in Ukraine and will work to expand and increase its operations, Martin Griffiths of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Friday.

"The UN and its humanitarian partners, all the people that I am lucky enough to work with, have committed to continue and indeed to expand our presence. We have not left; we are not leaving Ukraine," he said. Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and OCHA Emergency Relief Coordinator, during a briefing at the UN headquarters in New York.

Griffiths said that this year alone, the UN and its partners have delivered around 150 tons of assistance to the Donbas region.

He also noted that UN staff are "hunkering down at the moment" but said they are continuing to scale up efforts.

That expansion is accompanied by the establishment of an interagency operations center in Geneva, where Griffiths said he will head this weekend.

He recalled that UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Thursday the granting of US$20 million in humanitarian aid, saying that the funds will help support emergency operations along the line of contact in the Donetsk regions. and Luhansk.

Griffiths also stressed the importance of allowing safe access for UN workers in the region.

"We need safe and unimpeded access and protection for our humanitarian workers and the deliveries they are going to make, which they are going to resume, as soon as security allows, to all areas of Ukraine affected by the conflict," Griffiths said.

The UN humanitarian official also said that they are currently facilitating the temporary relocation of non-essential UN staff and eligible family members within Ukraine, in order to ensure their safety and protection.

"There are no plans at this time to relocate our staff out of the country, but we will obviously continue to assess developments in the security situation," Griffiths said.
