.: According to Austria’s Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP), Ukraine fears for its existence as a state.

At a joint press conference with Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder, Nehammer described the content of a recent telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“The President of Ukraine started by saying he is reporting from a country where he no longer knows how long it has existed, and he is reporting as President without knowing how long he will be alive,” Nehammer said .

According to the reports, there is heavy fighting in Ukraine, there are many dead, and civilian infrastructure is affected.

Nehammer accuses Russia of violating international law.

So Moscow does not claim the strength of the law, but the law of the strongest.

As a neutral country within the European Union, Austria deeply rejects this.

Furthermore, Nehammer emphasized that a uniform approach by the Europeans with sanctions is now important.

At the same time, however, the thread of the conversation must not break off.

"In a time of death - and this is war - unfortunately the guns speak more than the diplomats.

You have to reverse that,” said Nehammer.

"Hundreds of thousands of Jews" live in both countries, and their safety is "the top priority" in Israeli considerations.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also criticized the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a "heavy blow to peace and stability in the region".

Ukraine conflict: NATO wants to defy Putin - "We are now at war in Europe"

Update from February 24, 12:27 p.m .:

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has just made a statement after an emergency meeting of the 30 NATO ambassadors in Brussels.

"We now have a war in Europe on a scale we only know from history," he says.

"This is a difficult moment for security in Europe." Russia also targeted urban centers in Ukraine, and the attack had been planned for a long time.

"Despite the countless lies and propaganda, it speaks a clear language," says Stoltenberg.

"This is an act of aggression against a sovereign, independent and peaceful country." NATO is calling on Russia to immediately refrain from military action and to return to the negotiating table.

Russia is trying to rewrite history.

The NATO Council that met today was convened by several Eastern European countries that now also feel threatened by Russia.

Stoltenberg assures these countries of support: "NATO's core task is to protect all allies, there is no gray area, that's clear." An attack on one country is seen as an attack on everyone.

The NATO Council therefore decided today to activate its defense plans in Eastern Europe.

“This will enable us to increase forces where they are needed.

We have placed our defensive troops on heightened defensive alert.

Allies have sent thousands more troops.

Several hundred of our fighter jets are on high alert," says Stoltenberg.

"We will do everything necessary to protect ourselves." Stoltenberg clarified that no troops will be sent to Ukraine, which is not a member of NATO.

He also convened a meeting of NATO leaders.

The Kremlin's goal is to use force to expand its sphere of influence and tear up global security rules.

“Unfortunately, this is now our new normal for our security architecture.

We can no longer take peace for granted.”

At the same time, Scholz assured his solidarity with the NATO partners who are particularly close to Russia.

Addressing Poland, Romania and the Baltic States, he said: "I would like to expressly assure you that we understand your concerns only too well in view of this development.

This provides for consultations if an Ally sees its security and territorial sovereignty threatened.

According to diplomats from NATO countries, Poland, Romania, Estonia and Latvia have also called for the article to be activated.

Because of the danger of an invasion of Ukraine, NATO recently massively increased its troops on the eastern flank, including in Lithuania.

Germany sent another 350 soldiers to the Baltic state.

Overall, Germany is involved with almost 1,000 soldiers in the so-called NATO battle group in Lithuania.

The Baltic states have long felt threatened by their large neighbor Russia.

Ukraine conflict: China defends Putin and attacks the West

Update from February 24, 11:02 a.m .:

After the Russian military actions in Ukraine, China avoided direct criticism of Moscow and instead attacked the United States and other Western countries for their arms deliveries.

"The Ukraine issue is complex in its historical background," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a daily press briefing on Thursday. "What we see today is the interplay of complex factors."

Hua Chunying accused the United States and other Western countries of fueling the conflict by supplying arms.

“Guns can never solve all problems.

So I don't think this is the time for anyone to add fuel to the fire.

Instead, we should give peace a chance,” said the spokeswoman, who also recalled previous US military actions.

"You define the Russian action as an invasion, but I wonder if the US took unilateral military action against Afghanistan and other countries, what words did you use at the time?

Were they invasions or something else?” asked Hua Chunying.

These military actions would have resulted in many civilian casualties.

"We still hope that the parties concerned will not close the door to peace and instead engage in dialogue and consultation," said the spokeswoman on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

China is closely monitoring the situation.

"We urge all parties to exercise restraint and prevent the situation from spiraling out of control," the spokeswoman continued.

The EU had already decided on a first package after recognizing the independence of the separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine and sending Russian soldiers.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is bringing war back to Europe, said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday morning in Brussels.

"We condemn this barbaric attack and the cynical arguments used to justify it." The EU stands with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.

Russia's goal is not only the eastern Ukrainian region of Donbass, nor Ukraine.

“The goal is stability in Europe and the entire international peace order.
