At the height of the pandemic, in May, the country of 1.3 billion inhabitants recorded more than 400,000 new infections and some 4,000 deaths per day.

India has been traumatized by the scenes of dying patients, lack of oxygen, in overwhelmed hospitals, and crematoriums and cemeteries struggling to respond to the influx of remains.

In the past 24 hours, the country recorded 11,499 new cases and 255 deaths, according to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Health, far behind the devastating peak seen last year.
