Identity card: everything you need to know before applying

2022-02-26T06:23:24.114Z

The identity card, just like the passport, makes it possible to justify the identity of its holder and proves his French nationality. Documents to be provided, period of validity… Everything you need to know before making your request.

The parts to be provided

For a first application for a CNI (national identity card), it is strongly recommended to complete an online pre-application on the website of the National Agency for Secure Documents (ANTS).

You will then have to fill in several pieces of information, namely the reason for the pre-application, your marital status, information on your filiation, your nationality and your address.

Then, to finalize the request, you will have to make an appointment at the town hall.

On site, you will then have to complete your file with a certain number of documents:

  • Your pre-request number and/or the QR Code obtained at the end of your process (to save time, we advise you to print the pre-request summary),

  • A photo ID less than 6 months old,

  • A proof of address less than 6 months old,

  • Your current identity card:

    - In the event of theft: the declaration of theft (made at the gendarmerie or police station),

    - In the event of loss: the declaration of loss (can be made when submitting your file).

  • A revenue stamp in the amount of 25 euros (only in the event of loss or theft);

otherwise the identity card is free,

  • If the identity card has been expired for more than 5 years, lost or stolen: a valid passport or expired for less than 5 years and if you do not have one, a birth certificate of less than 3 months.

If the CNI request concerns a minor child, it will also be necessary to provide proof of residence of the parents under 1 year old (original + photocopy) as well as an identity document of the parent making the request (original + photocopy) .

Period of validity of the identity card

To finalize the process, you will then have to make a first appointment at the town hall.

This will be responsible for checking your supporting documents and collecting your fingerprints.

A second appointment to pick up your new title will also be necessary.

Please note: for the withdrawal of an identity card, the presence of the beneficiary is mandatory if he is of legal age.

Also, up to 12 years old, the minor must also come accompanied by the holder of parental authority.

Under 12 years of age, attendance is not compulsory.

Another question that we ask ourselves before applying, how long is the national identity card valid for?

Since January 1, 2014, it has been increased from 10 to 15 years for adults (for secure plastic cards issued from January 2, 2004).

For minors, the period of validity is 10 years.

Steps to take for a renewal

To renew your identity card, the process is more or less the same.

As with the first application, you will then have to complete an online pre-application, provide the same documents (here the old identity card) and make an appointment at a town hall to finalize the process.

Leadtime

Normally, it takes 3 to 4 weeks between the online pre-application and obtaining the identity card.

Since August 2021, as with the passport, these deadlines have tended to explode due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"

In France, it now takes an average of 24 days to get an appointment at the town hall

", then "

24 days to produce an identity document
