According to the police, a child died in a head-on collision between two cars near Barsinghausen in Lower Saxony, and at least four other people were seriously injured.

Two children die after a car accident in Barsinghausen near Hanover (Lower Saxony).

The parents and two other people are seriously injured.

Barsinghausen – Two children die after a serious car accident in the Hanover region in Lower Saxony*, four adults are injured: the police are now investigating the suspicion of an illegal car race.

The investigators heard witnesses and analyzed the evidence, a spokeswoman said on Saturday (February 26, 2022) for the German Press Agency (dpa).

We are looking for other witnesses to confirm or refute the suspicion.

Lower Saxony: Two children dead after an accident in Barsinghausen near Hanover

In the traffic accident in Barsinghausen (Hannover region), a two-year-old died on Friday (February 25th, 2022) at the scene of the accident.

His six-year-old brother succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on Saturday night (February 26, 2022), the police said.

The parents and two other people were seriously injured.

According to initial findings, a 39-year-old driver is said to have overtaken several vehicles and collided with various cars from oncoming traffic.

Among them was the oncoming car of the family of four, in which the two small children were sitting.

According to investigators, there is a suspicion that the woman engaged in an illegal street race.

Accordingly, the 39-year-old initially intended to overtake another car in a curve.

However, the driver of this car accelerated and the two vehicles drove side by side for a longer period of time.

Lower Saxony: Four adults seriously injured in an accident in Barsinghausen

Later, the woman collided with the car of a 50-year-old man, who left the road with his car to the right and came to a stop in an adjacent field.

She then reportedly collided with the family's car, which was thrown off the road to the right by the force of the impact, overturned and came to rest on the roof of an adjacent paddock.

Most recently, the woman collided with the car of a 74-year-old driver who was driving directly behind the family.

The 39-year-old suspected cause of the accident, the 50-year-old driver and the children's parents, a 29-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man, were seriously injured in the accident in Barsinghausen (Hanover region, Lower Saxony) and taken to hospitals.

The other two people involved in the accident were uninjured.

Photos showed a completely destroyed vehicle lying on its side.

Objects are scattered on the lawn next to the wagon.

According to the police, several ambulances and helicopters were in action on Friday.

The fire brigade freed the trapped family from the car and resuscitated the two children, although any help came too late for the younger boy.

Emergency chaplains took care of the psychological care of all those involved and the emergency services.

The police in Lower Saxony are now investigating negligent homicide, negligent bodily harm and a prohibited motor vehicle race.

Accidents of this magnitude are an enormous burden for the emergency services, but often also for the residents. In 2019, four people died in a head-on collision near Göttingen in southern Lower Saxony.
