The Russian ambassador to Ottawa, Oleg Stepanov, considered the Canadian authorities' decision to impose sanctions on President Vladimir Putin as "unacceptable" and contrary to the principles of relations between states and diplomatic ethics, stressing that Moscow would respond to these measures.
Russia Today website quoted Stepanov as saying, “The Canadian government in this way follows other countries that not only noticed the genocide committed by the Ukrainian regime against its people over the past 8 years, but also supported it, considering that the current period will be included later in the Black Book of Canadian History.
Stepanov saw this position as a complete contempt for the history of Canada and the generation of Canadians who contributed to the victory over Nazism.
Canada had previously imposed sanctions on President Putin, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov over the Russian military operation in Ukraine.
