Pax Christi set an example against the war in Ukraine on Friday with a spontaneous vigil at Freising's Marienplatz.

More are to follow.

Freising

- "We are shaken," emphasized Ernst Fischer from the Pax Christi peace movement Freising last Friday at Marienplatz Freising in view of the war in Ukraine.

That's why Pax Christi, together with the Kreisbildungswerk (KBW) Freising, decided spontaneously for a silent vigil without big speeches in the center of the city - because the suffering of the Ukrainian population is currently making us speechless, but not inactive.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Under the motto "We stand together against the war in Ukraine and for the victims of injustice and aggression!" the people of Freising gathered on Friday to set a first clear signal for peace with this vigil.

However, this vigil is only the start of various larger campaigns in Freising, for which Pax Christi will then bring other cooperation partners on board.

According to the peace movement, "We want to send a signal out of society."

End spirals of revenge and retaliation

On a leaflet, Pax Christi together with the KBW Freising demands, among other things, that the governments "must immediately decide on tough non-military sanctions so that the blatant violation of international law is punished".

Pax Christi and the KBW reject a delivery of weapons to the war zone.

For the initiators of the silent vigil, however, there are also some urgent questions, for example whether non-violent resistance by the Ukrainian population could end the spiral of revenge and retaliation.

Also a central question that the Freisingers were given by the leaflet: “Does Europe accept the war refugees with open arms?

And why don't we do the same for other war refugees - for example on the Polish-Belarusian border or on the Mediterranean?"

Pax Christi: Those who give up hope stop acting

But the peace movement also asked the question that is on many people's minds: "Are we permanently prepared to continue to support the sanctions that we all want now even if their effects affect us?" Those who give up hope, according to the initiators , stops acting and leaves the victims alone.

This is another reason why Freising will continue to hope and send clear signals.

Another Pax Christi vigil will be held at the same location on Friday, March 3, at 4 p.m.

At 5 p.m. there will be a Peace Way of the Cross in St. George's Church.
