As a florist, Marile Mereis has been supplying flowers to the citizens of Wiesse throughout her professional life.

Now she is giving up her shop in the town center.

The 61-year-old explains the reasons in an interview.

Bad Wiessee

– The Mereis family shop was initially located on Adrian-Stoop-Strasse, but for nine years the shop has been in the center of town, diagonally across from the town hall.

After 44 years in her own business, 61-year-old Marile Mereis now wants to take things easier: she is giving up her shop at Easter.

The place has lost a real institution.

We spoke to the lady from Wiesse about her departure as a businesswoman.

Ms. Mereis, on April 16 you will close your shop on Sanktjohanserstraße forever.

What feelings have accompanied you in these last few weeks?

Marile Mereis:

On the one hand, of course, it's a shame.

Most of all, I feel sorry for my customers.

On the other hand, I'm also looking forward to the time afterwards.

And it's not a farewell to professional life, but only to one's own business.

I still have to work a bit.

Does that mean you will remain in place as a florist?

Marile Mereis:

It is not yet clear what will happen to me after the closure of my shop.

Maybe I'll start with a colleague.

My two brothers also have their own nurseries.

But maybe I'll do something completely different.

Running your own flower shop probably means a lot of work.

Marile Mereis:

That is correct.

And it has become more and more work-related over the past few years.

Corona has also changed a lot: more and more customers want their goods delivered.

Apart from the first lockdown, we worked full time during the Corona period.

Flowers were always in demand, even during the crisis.

What will you miss the most after closing your business?

Marile Mereis:

Contact with my customers.

About half of the people who come to me are regular customers – I will of course miss them.

I will also miss the trips to the wholesale market in Munich.

Twice a week I start at 4.15 in the morning to shop at the wholesale market myself.

I've always loved doing that.

As a florist, surely you have favorite flowers?

Which variety will one always find in your home?

Marile Mereis:

I really like roses.

Otherwise, my preferences also depend on the season: Now at this time of year I would prefer spring flowers like tulips or primroses.

Do you know if a flower shop will move into the business premises again?

Marile Mereis:

No, it will be a different business.

I also don't know if I would really recommend anyone to open a flower shop.
