Lower Saxony's Energy Minister Olaf Lies believes that the long-discussed construction of an import terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Wilhelmshaven must be implemented as quickly as possible because of the war in Ukraine.

"We as a state will now do everything we can to advance the planning together with the city of Wilhelmshaven and the federal government," said the SPD politician on Sunday.

Wilhelmshaven/Berlin - His party colleague Olaf Scholz had previously announced that Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbüttel should quickly be prepared as locations for the delivery of LNG by ship.

The Chancellor said in the Bundestag that more would be done to ensure Germany's secure energy supply.

So far, the Federal Republic has been heavily dependent on supplies from Russia for natural gas and oil.

“We have to make ourselves self-sufficient from one-sided dependencies as quickly as possible,” demanded Lies.

“There is no longer any doubt that imports from Russia can no longer form the basis of our security of supply.

The alternative is to get stuck on the drip of Russian supplies.” He thinks it is realistic that the first LNG contingents could arrive in 2024.

Lies indicated that planning would be accelerated: "Together with the federal government, we urgently need to shorten the approval process and reduce the obstacles to rapid implementation.

We will also be holding talks with the European Union about this.” If necessary, decisions that have not yet been taken by the authorities could also be considered approval after a certain period of time.

In general, one lesson from Russia's war in Ukraine is already valid today: "We have to expand renewable energies even faster.

That is also a message to those who are skeptical about the expansion projects.” dpa
