2022-02-27T05:13:38.393Z

It was Ryan in the series '13 Reasons Why' and now she plays her first female role in the movie 'Sharp Stick'. Between one project and another of hers, she told her transition process on Instagram. “We are still taking the first steps in Hollywood in terms of trans and non-binary representation,” she says.

Actress Tommy Dorfman (United States, 29 years old) became known throughout the world with her role as Ryan, a poetry thief who appeared on one of the cassette tapes of the series

13 Reasons Why

(Netflix, 2017-2020) .

Shortly after finishing said series, in July 2021, she announced that she was a trans woman in the most official way possible, offering an extensive interview to Time

magazine.

.

This was recently done by actor Elliot Page and former Disney star Josie Totah.

In the case of Dorfman, his statements were accompanied by an extensive photo session.

Posing for the camera in the first steps of his new life is a way of validating herself, she tells on the other side of the screen, from his apartment in New York.

The session that she has starred in for this magazine has helped her to see herself "in ways that she had not done before."

Before presenting himself to the world, he had been showing his transition process through his Instagram account.

She did not give more explanations than those that her own images revealed.

For example, she did not count that she has decided to keep her first name.

She received it in honor of her uncle, who died when she was one month old.

“It is a tribute to the man who held me in her arms while she was dying,” she told the American publication.

Tommy Dorfman remembers the first time he got a women's haircut as a key moment in reaffirming his identity.

She remembers the day she first got a women's haircut as a defining moment in her life.

It is not a trivial matter, since he understands that fashion and beauty can become a beautiful armor.

“They are a way of showing how I would like to be seen, and from there also heard.

But they can also be tools to play with and not take ourselves very seriously;

elements of union between trans people and cisgender people;

between heterosexuals and homosexuals”, she defends.

Because educating through fashion is everyone's business.

“Without giving straight men all the credit, fluid aesthetics like Harry Styles help the

queer community,

in a world where you can be attacked for how you dress.

The less gender binary fashion and beauty are, the more they help make the world a safe space for everyone,” he argues.

Now he has the challenge of starting his career again.

She does it with her first female role in

Sharp Stick

, the film that Lena Dunham has just presented at the Sundance Festival.

She confesses that, until then, she had never enjoyed being on a film set.

“Lena has been something of a mentor to me over the years, as well as a great friend.

She is the person who advises me on my scripts, which is lucky because I have a lot of respect for her artistic vision,” she says.

“It was very special to participate in this film and to be in front of the camera being myself.

It was the perfect time to do it;

I fully trusted the person who was in charge,” she says.

“Without giving straights all the credit, fluid aesthetics like Harry Styles help the queer community, in a world where you can be attacked for how you dress,” explains Dorfman.

Thom Browne dress and shoes, and Sterling King ring.

"The less binary fashion is, the more it helps make the world a safe space," says the actress, who is wearing Pat McGrath's Ultra Glide eyeliner and a Christopher Kane dress in this photo.

Among the projects on which she has asked the creator of the

Girls

series for advice is adapting as a director the novel

I wish you all the best

(published in Spain by Planeta), by Mason Deaver.

“We are still taking the first steps in Hollywood in terms of trans and non-binary representation.

And this text tells the untold story of many people, ”she assures.

The protagonist of it is Ben, a non-binary teenager who has to start a new life with an older sister whom he barely knows, after his parents kicked him out of the house for coming out.

"I would have liked to find stories like this when I went to high school, to help me understand what I was experiencing."

Since she began living as a trans woman, she has received only kudos from the conservative NASCAR racing environment her parents worked in and grew up with.

But for a long time, Dorfman felt her transition was a terrifying journey she wasn't ready to take.

“Now I see it as a process in which you feel like when you are about to finish your studies and you have to go out into the world to be an adult.

And you have no idea what will become of your life.

In the end, you begin to feel comfortable in the face of that uncertainty and develop adaptive skills that make you stop feeling afraid.

I no longer feel it as something scary, but exhilarating.”
