A Russian star singer has found clear words about the war in Ukraine.

She was considered a supporter of Putin - but she also criticizes others.

Hamburg - "I want this war to stop": The Russian star singer Anna Netrebko has commented on the Ukraine conflict.

The Russian army has been attacking Ukraine since Thursday (February 24).

Netrebko writes on Instagram *: "I am Russian and love my country, but I have many friends in Ukraine, and the pain and suffering break my heart." She wanted the war to end and "the people in be able to live in peace.”

Netrebko's husband, Azerbaijani tenor Yusif Eyvazov, posted an almost identical statement on Instagram.

The two stress that they took some time before commenting because the situation was too serious "to comment without really thinking about it".

Anna Netrebko on the Ukraine conflict: In 2012 she supported Putin in his re-election

The Russian singer Netrebko has so far been considered more of a supporter of Putin.

Last year she celebrated her 50th birthday with a big gala in the Kremlin Palace in Moscow.

Congratulations from Russian President Vladimir Putin were also read during the four-hour concert.

He admired her singing skills: "Russia is proud of you as the representative of our domestic singing school," which is celebrating international success, it said in Putin's telegram of congratulations.

Netrebko is an "open, charming and kind-hearted person with a life-affirming character and a clear position as a citizen".

In 2012, the singer, along with around 500 other Russian artists, spoke out in favor of Putin's re-election.

In 2014, she caused a stir when she was photographed with a separatist leader and their flag at a donation ceremony for the opera and ballet house in the embattled eastern Ukrainian separatist stronghold of Donetsk.

Netrebko rejected a political assessment of the crisis at the time.

"This is politics and I have nothing to do with politics," she is quoted as saying by Die

Ukraine conflict: Anna Netrebko felt compelled to say - "I'm not a political person"

“I want this war to stop”: Netrebko and Eyvazov have spoken out about the current Ukraine conflict, but at the same time spoke out clearly against being forced to make a public statement.

"Forcing artists or any public figure to make their political views public and to insult their fatherland is not right," says the soprano.

This should be a free choice.

"I'm not a political person," Netrebko explained.

"I'm not a political expert.

I am an artist and my goal is to unite across political differences.” Netrebko is scheduled to perform at the Elbphilharmonie on March 2, reports
