On the second day of the workshop specialized in developing the general orientation of the agriculture and livestock sector in the Al-Fakhura district in Lattakia Governorate, the participants reviewed a number of proposals, potential difficulties and solutions after studying them within working groups that include technicians, specialists, farmers and representatives of government agencies.

The 4-day workshop in Apamea Resort in Lattakia is organized by the Syrian Trust for Development in partnership with the official institutions in the governorate, representatives of the local community, experts and specialists.

In a statement to SANA reporter, Rani Saqr, director of the branch of the Syrian Trust for Development in Lattakia Governorate, said, “The workshop does not offer temporary solutions, but rather aims to develop an integrated plan to achieve sustainable development after a careful study of the data, identifying requirements, and putting forward a set of proposals in line with the reality of the region, taking into account the diversity of The agricultural crops are rotated between villages, and the requirements for the success of these development projects are secured.”

Saqr pointed out that the proposed projects included 13 specialized agricultural titles that varied between olives, citrus, tobacco, medicinal and aromatic plants, fodder crops, beekeeping, cows, sheep and poultry, making available and raising the efficiency of water use, technical and electronic support, marketing and electronic marketing support, in addition to an attempt to revive the profession of sericulture.

The agricultural expert, Engineer Munther Khairbek, explained that the workshop came in response to the damage caused to a number of villages and regions of the governorate as a result of the fires, which in some of them reached about 70 percent, and their negative effects, which were largely reflected on farmers and caused the deterioration of agricultural crops and the loss of many fruitful and forest trees, noting that Al-Fakhoura district is famous for producing large quantities of olive oil, as there are about one million trees in it, of which about 70 or 80 percent were damaged, and the damage to citrus fruits was about 50 percent out of about 600,000 trees.

Khairbek noted the constructive ideas presented by the draft of the workshop, which were reached after surveying the opinion of the people of the region about continuing to cultivate old crops or establishing new projects in proportion to the nature of the region and the availability of the necessary ingredients for success and its positive impact if it is adopted and implemented on the ground in terms of accelerating the turnover The wheel of the development process and helping the people to return to their lands and improve their income, stressing that agricultural production and support for the production process under the current circumstances are the mainstay of the country's steadfastness and returning to agriculture is a first step to achieving economic recovery.

Head of the Medical Herbs Association in Syria and director of Syria Medicinal Herbs Company in the Bakrama area in Lattakia countryside, Dr. Shadi Khatib, praised the good results achieved by the experience of medicinal and aromatic plants, pointing out the importance of encouraging them as complementary and supportive cultivation that contributes to providing additional income and training farmers to grow medicinal plants appropriate for the region, species and parts Which can be used medically, such as the Syrian thyme (Thyme Al-Khalili), needle thyme, Melissa, lemongrass, hyssop and sage, and distributed in cooperation with the Basin nursery, which produces medicinal and aromatic plants, and how to sustain this cultivation without affecting the basic crops.

The farmer Ali Othman from the village of Istamo in the Al-Fakhoura district, pointed out the importance of participating in such workshops and seminars for their role in enhancing knowledge and exploring new horizons, enabling them to find alternative income-generating solutions and crops that mitigate the loss of crops and lands, noting the great interest that the Syrian Trust for Development has given in various Teams for those affected and follow up on their affairs.

It is noteworthy that the Al-Fakhoura district was chosen in the workshop as the most affected area by the fires in the Qardaha region in particular and Lattakia in general as the starting point for the development strategy that will continue in all areas affected by the fires that broke out in the coastal and central regions in late 2020 to reach a sustainable community It enjoys self-sufficiency and optimally invests its resources to advance the living and social reality, with a focus on the agricultural file.
