US President Joe Biden has decided not to fall into the trap set by Russian President Vladimir Putin, when the latter announced in a defiant move yesterday the increased readiness of strategic forces - a branch of the military responsible for, among other things, Russia's nuclear arsenal.

Putin claimed he was forced to respond to NATO aggression, which increased aid to Kiev and imposed widespread sanctions on Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine. Routine vigilance

Instead, senior government officials strongly condemned the Russian president and the further escalation it produces for achieving political goals. And she accused Putin of "another escalating and unnecessary step that threatens us all."

As has happened throughout the crisis in recent months, the whole world is busy guessing what Putin meant and whether he is just bluffing.

Many were convinced that the large concentration of forces within the borders of Ukraine was only a demonstration of power aimed at extorting concessions from the West, and did not believe that it would open a comprehensive war against its neighbor.

Apparently, even senior government officials did not know until the last minute whether Putin would give the green light to the largest invasion of Europe since World War II.

Therefore, a bet on the next step of the Russian president is doomed to failure.

Lukashenko has threatened to deploy nuclear weapons from Russia in recent months over "Western threats," and the war in Ukraine could escalate in the coming days to a scenario reminiscent of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

It was then resolved thanks to the determination of US President John F. Kennedy and the readiness of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to get off the tree in exchange for a secret expulsion of American missiles from Turkey, but Biden and Putin have failed to reach similar understandings during talks in recent months.

Now, one can only hope that Putin will remain restrained by the concept of guaranteed mutual annihilation - MAD - that contributed to the non-violent end of the Cold War more than 30 years ago.

For Biden, on the eve of his first nation - state speech, this is one more major international headache, pushing aside his original plan to focus on the reconstruction of America.
