The US government has indications that Russia may be using the Wagner mercenary company "at some points" in its attack on Ukraine.

"It's not exactly clear where or how or to what extent, but we've seen some signs they're being deployed," said a senior US Defense Department official.

They could therefore be involved in some places.

The European Union has accused the Russian company Wagner of inciting violence and intimidating civilians and imposed sanctions on the organization on December 13, 2021.

Regarding reports that Belarus is preparing to send soldiers to support the Russian military in Ukraine, the US Department of Defense said it had not received any indication so far.

"We have seen no signs that Belarusian troops are ready to invade Ukraine, much less that they are actually moving towards Ukraine or are there," the senior official said.

Frustration in Russia could lead to more aggressive action

The ministry also assumes that the Ukrainian soldiers have so far slowed down the Russian advance.

One can assume that the Russian army is particularly frustrated with the progress regarding Kyiv.

It is estimated that it is 25 kilometers away from Kyiv and has made up about five kilometers compared to the previous day.

"We are certainly aware that frustration could lead to more aggressive action by the Russians," the official said.

So far, however, this has not been seen.

"We think they want to encircle Kyiv, and it's possible they could use siege tactics there."
