A 4-year-old boy dies after shooting himself with a gun in his car while his mother was shopping in a Georgia supermarket

A 4-year-old boy accidentally shot himself with a gun while waiting in the car while his mother shopped at a Publix supermarket in Atlanta, Georgia, police said.

The woman, whose identity has not been made public, arrived at 5 p.m. Sunday at a shopping center located at 3045 Panola Road in Dekalb County.

She was traveling with her son Miyell Hernandez, a baby, and another minor, a 13-year-old family member, police said in a press release.

She entered the supermarket alone, leaving the children in the car.

In circumstances that are still unknown, Hernández shot himself with a pistol.

The 13-year-old boy then ran into the store for help.

The injured minor was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Police said no charges have been filed in the case.

"Our hearts and thoughts go out to the Hernandez family," DeKalb County Sheriff Mirtha Ramos said.

“We are imploring gun owners to always keep their guns safe and secure,” she noted.

The police department said it will host an event later this month offering free gun safety and tips for safe storage.

Last month, another 4-year-old boy in Louisiana shot himself to death after finding a gun in the back seat of a car while his mother and a friend smoked marijuana out front.

So far in 2022, there have been at least 30 unintentional shootings by children, resulting in 13 deaths and 18 injuries, according to a national tally by Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit organization dedicated to gun control. of weapons. 

Last year there were at least 377 unintentional shootings by children, resulting in 154 deaths across the country.
