The activities of the third day of the workshop specialized in the general orientation of the agriculture and livestock sector in the Al-Fakhoura district in Lattakia, organized by the Syrian Trust for Development in partnership with the official institutions in the governorate, were concluded in agreement on the proposals presented in the draft that was prepared in yesterday’s session and adopted after discussing the ideas that were reached from before working groups.

The draft included 13 specialized agricultural titles that varied between olives, citrus, tobacco, medicinal and aromatic plants, fodder crops, beekeeping, cows, sheep and poultry, making available and raising the efficiency of water use, technical and electronic support, marketing support and electronic marketing, in addition to an attempt to revive an ancient profession of sericulture.

Dr. Fayez Al-Miqdad, Assistant Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, indicated that the workshop’s goal was to reach consensus on a vision for a development plan and to build a development model in Al-Fakhoura district based on the discussions and dialogues that took place during the past two days and possible areas for development. To determine the steps and activities that will lead us to the desired goals, while we will focus in tomorrow’s session on setting work priorities and starting a specific project within a sector without others, according to the capabilities and available resources and the ability to meet its requirements and needs.

Areen Al-Ali, the national director of the "My Project" program at the Syrian Trust for Development, said in a statement to SANA reporter: Today we were able to reach consensus on the draft general orientation that we discussed during the past two days, and the proposals put forward for all axes were adopted by stakeholders from government agencies, local society, technicians and specialists.

In turn, Yasser Muhammad, head of the Department of Prevention and Plants in the Latakia Agriculture Directorate, said: The proposal to re-breed silkworms is one of the suitable home projects for all rural families and smallholders and provides a good economic return, stressing the directorate’s readiness to secure the larvae of the third larval age in order to save time and effort, and to conduct training courses for breeders on Modern methods The Japanese and Indian mulberry trees were also included in the afforestation plans for the development of this project after the significant decline in recent years due to the lack of a pure breed and the economic blockade that stopped supplies and the biggest and most important obstacle is the weak marketing of coastal heritage products.

Farmer Fouad Maarouf, a beekeeper from Yarta village in Al-Fakhoura sub-district, talked about beekeeping in the area and the positive role that the establishment of a cooperative in the area and the provision of breeding requirements can play in increasing the number of cells, productivity and the quality of honey specifications, and the importance of encouraging fodder crops and aromatic plants because they constitute good pastures for bees.
