Corona in Germany: Incidence continues to fall - new hope for vaccination in several federal states

The corona numbers in Germany continue to decline.

With the start of the Novavax vaccinations in several federal states, there is hope for new impetus.

Update from February 28, 7:20 p.m .:

The state of Hesse started corona vaccinations with the protein-based vaccine Nuvaxovid on Monday.

Previously, there had been delivery bottlenecks at the US manufacturer Novavax, which is why the start date had to be pushed back.

But the first doses of the preparation arrived at the weekend.

Citizens in the Hessian municipalities of Groß-Gerau, Riedstadt-Wolfskehlen and Rüsselsheim can currently be vaccinated with Nuvaxovid.

In the future, further vaccination centers will be available in Hesse.

The ministry initially expected around 108,000 Novavax cans for the entire state.

The vaccination offers should be aimed in particular at employees in the care and health sector, for whom vaccination will be compulsory from March 16th.

The Novavax vaccine could be an alternative for those who have reservations about mRNA vaccines* offered by Biontech/Pfizer* and Moderna*.

With the new vaccine, the demand for vaccination did not initially increase noticeably, said a spokeswoman for the district of Groß-Gerau.

According to the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs, around ten percent of employees in care, clinics or facilities for the disabled in Hesse are not vaccinated.

12,000 vaccine doses administered on Sunday - a total of 75.4 percent of the population are now vaccinated

Update from February 28, 4:59 p.m .:

A little more than 12,000 vaccine doses against the corona virus were administered in Germany on Sunday.

According to the RKI, around 1,000 of these were initial vaccinations.

Around 26,000 doses had been administered on Sunday a week ago.

In the meantime, 75.4 percent of the population (at least 62.7 million people) have received basic protection, which usually requires two injections.

56.9 percent (47.3 million) also received a booster vaccination.

76.3 percent (63.4 million) have been vaccinated at least once.

A large group of 23.7 percent of the population (19.7 million people) remains unvaccinated, according to the Department of Health's immunization dashboard.

However, no vaccine has been approved for 4.8 percent (four million) because they are four years old or younger.

The RKI has long pointed out that the numbers shown are to be understood as minimum vaccination rates.

The RKI assumes that the actual vaccination rate is up to five percentage points higher than indicated on the dashboard.

Baden-Württemberg’s interior minister and CDU state leader Thomas Strobl is in the hospital due to his corona infection.

"Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Thomas Strobl went to the hospital as a precautionary measure in connection with his corona infection," a spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior told the German Press Agency on Monday.

"With a view to protecting his privacy, we ask that you refrain from making inquiries."

A week ago, a PCR test confirmed Strobl's infection.

At that time there was talk of mild cold symptoms.

A CDU spokeswoman emphasized a week ago that Strobl was fully able to work and was doing his home office.

Corona in Germany: Incidence continues to fall

First report from February 28:

Berlin – The nationwide seven-day incidence has fallen again.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the value on Monday morning as 1238.2.

For comparison: the day before the value was 1240.3.

A week ago, the nationwide incidence was 1346.8 (previous month: 1073.0).

The health authorities in Germany reported a total of 62,349 new infections with the corona virus * to the RKI within one day.

A week ago there were 73,867 infections.

However, the RKI points out that no data was transmitted from Brandenburg yesterday.

Experts also assume a high number of cases that are not recorded in the RKI data.

One reason is the limited capacity of health authorities, for example, and contacts are often only tracked to a limited extent.

In addition, according to the ALM laboratory association, there is now a larger number of people whose corona infection * is no longer confirmed by a PCR test - these infections are therefore not included in the official statistics.

The RKI also recorded 24 new deaths within one day.

The number of patients infected with Corona * who came to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was given by the RKI * on Friday at 6.28 (Thursday: 6.27).

Among them are many people with a positive corona test who have another main illness.

However, the value is not reported on weekends.

Corona vaccinations: Novavax start in several federal states

With the beginning of the new weeks, people in other federal states can be vaccinated with the new corona vaccine from Novavax*.

From Monday this will be possible in Rhineland-Palatinate, Thuringia, Berlin and a district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

This was the result of a survey by the German Press Agency among the responsible authorities in all federal states.

In Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Saarland and partly in North Rhine-Westphalia there were already vaccination options with the vaccine at the weekend.

The other federal states want to offer Novavax vaccinations in the course of the week.

The first deliveries of the preparation arrived last Thursday (February 24) at the Bundeswehr in Quakenbrück, Lower Saxony.

Delivery to the federal states finally began on Friday (February 25).

The state health ministers had spoken out in favor of initially offering the vaccine primarily to unvaccinated health care workers.

Because in the industry, the institution-related vaccination obligation will take effect from March 15th.

The vaccine was injected at the weekend, but also to people who were not prioritized.

The federal government hopes that the vaccine from the US manufacturer Novavax will give new impetus to the vaccination campaign in Germany.

The agent was approved as the fifth corona vaccine * in the EU - for people aged 18 and over.

Two doses are injected about three weeks apart.

It is a protein vaccine - it is therefore based on a different technology than the mRNA corona vaccines from Biontech*/Pfizer and Moderna* that have mostly been used up to now.
