The Green member of the Bundestag Karl Bär spoke to 55 participants about the Ukraine conflict in an online conversation.

He blamed Putin for the war.

Holzkirchen – In a video call on Monday evening, Karl Bär made it very clear who, in his view, was solely to blame for the war in Ukraine.

The Green member of the Bundestag from Holzkirchen told the 55 participants from his constituency that it was a war by Putin, a war by the Russian president against Ukraine.

Putin's reasons for invading Ukraine are ridiculous: "There was never a threat from NATO.

What is happening here is a breach of international law.” According to the law of the strongest, Putin causes suffering and victims.

"If we allow that to happen, we risk it happening elsewhere."

Bär had invited to the video call because, as he said, the war affects many people in his constituency.

He felt the need to share his impressions from Berlin sessions with these people.

Topics: danger of nuclear war, economy, refugees

In the hour-and-a-half debate, Bär addressed many topics.

Topic one: the risk of further escalation.

The use of nuclear weapons cannot be ruled out, said the member of the Bundestag.

He advocated the delivery of German arms because they supported Ukraine's right to self-defense.

"We do not act militarily."

Topic two: the economy.

The war harms not only the Russian economy, but also the German economy, Bär said: "It will lead to inflation and gas costs will go up." The exclusion from the Swift system would mean that payments and deliveries would fail.

In the case of oil and coal, Germany could replace them.

The problem is the gas and heating next winter.

Grain, especially wheat, will also become expensive.

As countermeasures, the government is planning new regulations for the storage of liquid gas and investments in social security.

Alternative energies are also “necessary for national security”.

Topic three: war refugees.

Bär asked for strength, unity and solidarity.

500,000 people are on their way, and the government is counting on millions more.

The first have already arrived in Wolfratshausen, which maintains a town partnership in the Ukraine.

Other topics of discussion were the Bundeswehr - Bär spoke of a debate about "equipment, not rearmament" -, the extension of the operation of nuclear power plants and the future of gas-fired power plants.

The participants praised Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock ("Frau Tacheles") and reprimanded the CSU and Friedrich Merz.

"Democracy is stronger than tyrannical systems"

Bär was unable to answer a few questions: The member of the Bundestag did not want to assess the outcome of the peace talks, Putin's mental state and the possible influence of sensible advisors on the president.

“Remote diagnosis is not useful.

But I have hope that the conflict will end peacefully.

The fact that the parties sit down and talk is a good political sign.”

Bär also justified his hope for a peaceful solution with the actions of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyj and Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko (“impressive”) and a quote from Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD): “Democracy is stronger than tyrannical systems.”
