North Rhine-Westphalia wants to enable refugee children from the Ukraine to attend school as quickly as possible.

In view of the Russian invasion, the Ministry of Education is preparing everything necessary in close cooperation with the school authorities, it said on Tuesday on request.

"We are very concerned about the war in Ukraine, which is forcing thousands of Ukrainians to flee," said School Minister Yvonne Gebauer (FDP).

Düsseldorf – Among them are many children and young people.

"North Rhine-Westphalia stands by its responsibility and welcomes the people who are coming to safety from the war."

NRW has a good school integration infrastructure, so that children and young people can be admitted to schools "quickly and flexibly", said the minister.

"Going to school not only gives the refugees contact with their peers, but also gives them a bit of everyday structure and normality and thus a feeling of security during these difficult times."

Gebauer emphasized that she was aware that the schools and the school authorities were already having to deal with particular challenges as a result of the corona pandemic.

"We will therefore leave no stone unturned to initiate additional measures to support our schools." The Ministry is already providing targeted support to teachers in dealing with the war in Ukraine and has sent them a digital collection of materials.

The Russian invasion led to insecurities and fears in large parts of the school community and raised questions that were difficult to answer for everyone involved, according to a school email from Düsseldorf.

When dealing with the Ukraine war, the main thing is to deal responsibly with the fears of children and young people and to ensure peace at school, even in the event of any conflicts between schoolchildren.
