The booster after the booster: The Standing Vaccination Committee (Stiko) recommends a second booster vaccination.

Who should get a second booster vaccination or a 4th corona vaccination.

Berlin – Who should get a fourth Corona* vaccination in Germany?

Israel has been administering a second booster vaccination with an mRNA vaccine for some time.

For Germany, the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) presented a recommendation for the booster after the booster.

Special groups of people should therefore receive a second booster vaccination.

The Stiko then recommends, of course after a complete basic immunization, a further vaccination with an mRNA vaccine from Moderna or Biontech/Pfizer.

Stiko recommends 2nd booster vaccination with mRNA vaccine from Biontech and Moderna

For the fourth vaccination, it is important to keep time intervals, emphasized RKI boss Lothar Wieler at a press conference on Friday in Berlin.

At the earliest three months after an initial booster, all people over 70 should receive another vaccination with an mRNA vaccine from Biontech* or Moderna*.

Stiko recommends a greater interval of six months between boosters and a booster vaccination for medical staff, for example.

Second Booster: According to Stiko, who should get a second booster shot - and when

  • All people over

    70 years of age -

three months after the 1st booster vaccination

  • Residents and cared for in a care facility - three months after the 1st booster vaccination

  • Individuals with immunodeficiency from the age of 5 years - three months after the 1st booster vaccination

  • Persons working in medical and care facilities -

    six months

    after the 1st booster vaccination.

A second booster vaccination after three months is possible in justified individual cases.

3 months or 6 months - why does the Stiko make a difference in the second booster?

According to Stiko, there should be at least three months between the first booster vaccination and the second booster vaccination.

But for people who work in hospitals or nursing homes, the Stiko recommends a much longer interval of six months.

"Stiko assumes that in people with a healthy immune system, the vaccination protection after the first booster vaccination is better and that a longer vaccination interval is immunologically more favorable for long-term protection".

Stiko clarifies who does not need a 2nd booster shot

However, the Stiko also provides for exceptions.

Anyone who has survived a corona infection despite full vaccination and boosters does not need a second booster vaccination.

"For people in the above groups who have undergone a SARS-CoV-2 infection after the COVID-19 basic immunization and 1st booster vaccination, no further vaccination with the currently available COVID-19 vaccines is recommended for the time being." That is in to read the updated Stiko recommendation for Covid-19 vaccination (status: February 17, 2022).

Second booster with Biontech and Moderna useful?

Vaccination is a key to ending the corona pandemic.

Corona experts agree on this point.

Covid-19 vaccines protect against serious illnesses and can prevent admissions to intensive care units.

However, vaccination does not offer 100 percent protection against infection.

According to experts, the booster is indispensable.

According to current knowledge, the booster protection falls off after about ten weeks.

Will a second booster vaccination bring the immune system back on track?

Fourth vaccination with Biontech - First data from Israel are available

The first data from Israel were initially sobering.

A fourth dose of Biontech/Pfizer increased the rise in antibodies, but these quickly fell again.

The scientists themselves had hoped for more.

Carsten Watzl, Secretary General of the German Society for Immunology, commented on the study from Israel published as a preprint (February 15) on Twitter: "Little benefit at the current time with the current vaccine!" The data from Israel showed that the fourth vaccination had little effect on who had T cells (part of the adaptive immune system).

Protection against a symptomatic infection accounts for only 30 to 40 percent.

However, immunologist Watzl added that the results are not necessarily transferrable to people over 70 years of age.

Then,

Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) himself took up the Watzl tweet and openly expressed doubts about the fourth corona vaccination.

"These data from Israel tend to speak against a 4th vaccination for everyone."

Fourth corona vaccination: This is how Sweden regulates it

Israel, Denmark, Spain and Sweden are already recommending a fourth corona vaccination for certain population groups.

Sweden has been recommending a fourth corona vaccination for everyone over 80 since February 14.

All people who are cared for in nursing homes or who are in home care should be vaccinated.

The ability of the immune system to respond to a vaccine and provide lasting protection decreases with age, Sweden's top health authority said.

According to the authority's recommendation, the fourth vaccination should be given no earlier than four months after the third.

Despite the low vaccination rate (74.6 percent), Sweden is daring to exit the corona virus.

In Sweden, however, more than 85 percent of all residents over the age of 80 have already received a third dose of the corona vaccine.

In Denmark, the vaccination rate is 80.9 percent.

The number of infections is falling.

A trend that is emerging according to the Danish Statens Serum Institut (SSI).

There has been a significant decline in the number of infections almost all over the country.

The current SSI report concludes that the corona pandemic is abating.
