The smell of burning is in the air, some onlookers gather at the police barrier: A residential building in Kraichtal has gone up in flames.

A mother and two children are dead. But the woman is said to have had three children.

Kraichtal – After a house fire in the district of Karlsruhe, emergency services recovered three bodies on Tuesday.

According to police spokesman Ralf Minet, it was a woman and two children.

Another child of the mother is still missing.

A first responder is said to have sustained such severe burn injuries in the fire in Kraichtal that he was taken to the hospital.

"It's all very tragic," Minet said.

A witness reported hearing a bang early in the afternoon.

After that, the house in the Baden-Württemberg town immediately caught fire.

The attic of the rear building burned out completely.

There, the emergency services would have discovered the three dead.

Minet initially gave no information on the age of the dead.

It is also unclear exactly how the victims died.

According to initial findings, the investigators assumed that the death was directly related to the fire.

The family recently moved into the house.

There was initially no information about the whereabouts of the father.

He probably didn't live in the house.

The seriously injured man had reportedly wanted to put out the fire.

It was initially unclear what connection he had to the dead.

A rescue helicopter flew him to a clinic.

The cause of the fire must now be determined as well as the exact causes of death.

It was not clear on Tuesday whether new findings could be expected on Wednesday.

"Everything is open," said Minet when asked about the possible course of events.

The police blocked the road around the scene of the fire near the train station in the Unteröwisheim district.

The Kraichtal volunteer fire brigade brought the flames under control.

More than 150 fire brigade, police and rescue services were deployed.

A helicopter circled the area and took pictures of the fire.

The smell of burning was still in the air hours later.

A few people passed the barrier, including mothers with children.

Many of them were appalled.

The operator of a nearby hotel reported that the house had been empty for years.

He didn't know that someone was living there again.

It was bad, he couldn't find the words.

Kraichtal is located in the northeast of the district of Karlsruhe and has around 15,000 inhabitants.

About 3,500 people live in Unteröwisheim itself.
