Corona in Germany: Novavax start is very cautious

Update from March 1, 10:32 p.m .:

The new corona vaccine Novavax has been vaccinated in some federal states since Saturday (February 26).

More and more states are following suit.

In Bavaria, the vaccine should be available from Wednesday.

But the Novavax campaign got off to a slow start.

Some districts, such as Groß-Gerau in Hesse, only had 15 vaccinations on the first day - a total of 4,500 vaccine doses are available there.

Meanwhile, Germany is planning a further 1.5 billion US dollars for the international fight against the corona pandemic.

A further 224 million euros are to help developing countries with logistics “so that vaccines can also be used for vaccinations”.

This means that Germany is currently the second largest donor to the global vaccination initiative.

The goal is a global vaccination rate of 70 percent, which is currently a long way off.

Corona in Germany: Virologist Drosten speaks of “no infection-free summer”

Update from March 1, 9:20 p.m .:

The incidences in Germany are falling, but how will summer be?

Virologist Christian Drosten believes that the omicron variant of the virus can also be infected in summer.

That's what the professor at the Charité said in the podcast "Coronavirus Update" on NDR-Info.

The vaccination progress is not sufficient and the infection activity through Omikron is still high.

"That's why I assume that there will be no infection-free summer," said Drosten.

In South Africa, for example, the omicron wave rose sharply in midsummer.

Drosten does not assume an "untamed" wave, but "you will also be able to get infected with this omicron virus in the summer".

Accordingly, he also thinks it is advisable to continue wearing masks indoors in summer.

In particular, wearing FFP2 masks indoors is “the most efficient measure of all” in the long term.

Drosten also sees another wave of winter after the summer - according to his hope without a serious burden of illness in the population, but with the risk of work losses on a large scale.

Corona in Germany: Ease of travel for families - Immediate free testing for children under 12

Update from March 1, 8:03 p.m .:

Relief for those returning from vacation: Only countries in which virus variants with “more worrying properties” are rampant than the omicron variant that dominates here should be classified as high-risk areas with more extensive requirements when entering Germany.

The new regulations should take effect from this Thursday, as the Ministry of Health explained - Friday was initially targeted.

There should be special relief for families with children, the Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday at the request of the German Press Agency.

As provided for in a new entry regulation approved by the Federal Cabinet, it should be possible for children under the age of 12 to test themselves directly from an otherwise pending quarantine after returning from high-risk areas.

So far, the general rule has been: Anyone who comes from such areas and has not been fully vaccinated or recovered must be in quarantine for ten days and can only get out of it five days after entry with a negative test at the earliest.

For children under the age of 6, the isolation ends automatically five days after entry - but without the opportunity to test yourself earlier.

Corona in Germany: Baden-Württemberg starts with Novavax vaccinations

Update from March 1, 5:34 p.m.:

The number of corona vaccinations is decreasing

(see update from March 1, 1:30 p.m.).

Hopes are therefore pinned on the new vaccine Novavax, which is either already being used in many parts of Germany or is to be vaccinated from next week.

The first doses of Novavax's new corona vaccine were administered in Baden-Württemberg on Tuesday.

The long-awaited goods arrived at the Stuttgart Clinic at midday, and a few hours later the first vaccinations were given.

A total of 60 appointments were made in the clinic at the start, and a further 300 people will be vaccinated with the preparation on Wednesday, said a spokeswoman.

In Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Saarland, the first vaccinations with the product from the US company Novavax were offered last Saturday, and other federal states followed on Monday.

Corona in Germany: The rate of vaccinations is falling

Update from March 1, 1:30 p.m .:

Around 73,000 vaccine doses against the corona virus were administered in Germany on Monday.

This emerged on Tuesday from data from the Robert Koch Institute.

According to the information, around 108,000 doses had been administered on Monday a week ago, and around 117,000 two weeks ago.

In the meantime, 75.4 percent of the population (at least 62.7 million people) have received basic protection, which usually requires two injections.

57.0 percent (47.4 million) also received a booster vaccination.

76.3 percent (63.5 million) have been vaccinated at least once. A large group of 23.7 percent of the population (19.7 million people) remains unvaccinated, according to the Department of Health's immunization dashboard.

However, no vaccine has been approved for 4.8 percent (four million) because they are four years old or younger.

Corona in Germany: RKI reports current figures

Update from March 1st, 9.40 a.m .:

The corona pandemic seems to be easing further in Germany.

The nationwide seven-day incidence has fallen again.

The Robert Koch Institute gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week on Tuesday morning as 1213.0.

For comparison: the day before the value was 1238.2.

A week ago, the nationwide incidence was 1306.8 (previous month: 1206.2).

The health authorities in Germany reported 122,111 new corona infections to the RKI within one day.

The RKI reports a slight decrease compared to the previous week.

Last Tuesday there were 125,902 infections.

Experts assume a high number of cases that are not recorded in the RKI data.

One reason is the limited capacity of health authorities, for example, and contacts are often only tracked to a limited extent.

In addition, according to the ALM laboratory association, there is now a larger number of people whose infection is no longer confirmed by a PCR test - these infections are therefore not included in the official statistics.

According to the new information, 235 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours.

A week ago there were 306 deaths.

The number of corona-infected patients who came to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was 6.08 on Monday (Friday: 6.28).

Among them are many people with a positive corona test who have another main illness.

The value is not reported on weekends.

Corona in Germany: Hessen starts with corona vaccinations with Nuvaxovid

Update from February 28, 7:20 p.m .:

The state of Hesse started corona vaccinations with the protein-based vaccine Nuvaxovid on Monday.

Previously, there had been delivery bottlenecks at the US manufacturer Novavax, which is why the start date had to be pushed back.

But the first doses of the preparation arrived at the weekend.

Citizens in the Hessian municipalities of Groß-Gerau, Riedstadt-Wolfskehlen and Rüsselsheim can currently be vaccinated with Nuvaxovid.

In the future, further vaccination centers will be available in Hesse.

The ministry initially expected around 108,000 Novavax cans for the entire state.

The vaccination offers should be aimed in particular at employees in the care and health sector, for whom vaccination will be compulsory from March 16th.

The Novavax vaccine could be an alternative for those who have reservations about mRNA vaccines* offered by Biontech/Pfizer* and Moderna*.

With the new vaccine, the demand for vaccination did not initially increase noticeably, said a spokeswoman for the district of Groß-Gerau.

According to the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs, around ten percent of employees in care, clinics or facilities for the disabled in Hesse are not vaccinated.

12,000 vaccine doses administered on Sunday - a total of 75.4 percent of the population are now vaccinated

Update from February 28, 4:59 p.m .:

A little more than 12,000 vaccine doses against the corona virus were administered in Germany on Sunday.

According to the RKI, around 1,000 of these were initial vaccinations.

Around 26,000 doses had been administered on Sunday a week ago.

In the meantime, 75.4 percent of the population (at least 62.7 million people) have received basic protection, which usually requires two injections.

56.9 percent (47.3 million) also received a booster vaccination.

76.3 percent (63.4 million) have been vaccinated at least once.

A large group of 23.7 percent of the population (19.7 million people) remains unvaccinated, according to the Department of Health's immunization dashboard.

However, no vaccine has been approved for 4.8 percent (four million) because they are four years old or younger.

The RKI has long pointed out that the numbers shown are to be understood as minimum vaccination rates.

The RKI assumes that the actual vaccination rate is up to five percentage points higher than indicated on the dashboard.

Corona in Germany: Baden-Württemberg's Minister of the Interior in the hospital

Update from February 28, 3:07 p.m .:

In March, some easing of the corona rules are pending in Germany.

The measures and other nationwide changes at a glance*.

Update from February 28, 12:12 p.m .:

Baden-Württemberg’s interior minister and CDU state leader Thomas Strobl is in the hospital due to his corona infection.

"Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Thomas Strobl went to the hospital as a precautionary measure in connection with his corona infection," a spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior told the German Press Agency on Monday.

"With a view to protecting his privacy, we ask that you refrain from making inquiries."

A week ago, a PCR test confirmed Strobl's infection.

At that time there was talk of mild cold symptoms.

A CDU spokeswoman emphasized a week ago that Strobl was fully able to work and was doing his home office.

Corona in Germany: Incidence continues to fall

First report from February 28:

Berlin – The nationwide seven-day incidence has fallen again.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the value on Monday morning as 1238.2.

For comparison: the day before the value was 1240.3.

A week ago, the nationwide incidence was 1346.8 (previous month: 1073.0).

The health authorities in Germany reported a total of 62,349 new infections with the corona virus * to the RKI within one day.

A week ago there were 73,867 infections.

However, the RKI points out that no data was transmitted from Brandenburg yesterday.

Experts also assume a high number of cases that are not recorded in the RKI data.

One reason is the limited capacity of health authorities, for example, and contacts are often only tracked to a limited extent.

In addition, according to the ALM laboratory association, there is now a larger number of people whose corona infection * is no longer confirmed by a PCR test - these infections are therefore not included in the official statistics.

The RKI also recorded 24 new deaths within one day.

The number of patients infected with Corona * who came to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was given by the RKI * on Friday at 6.28 (Thursday: 6.27).

Among them are many people with a positive corona test who have another main illness.

However, the value is not reported on weekends.

Corona vaccinations: Novavax start in several federal states

With the beginning of the new weeks, people in other federal states can be vaccinated with the new corona vaccine from Novavax*.

From Monday this will be possible in Rhineland-Palatinate, Thuringia, Berlin and a district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

This was the result of a survey by the German Press Agency among the responsible authorities in all federal states.

In Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Saarland and partly in North Rhine-Westphalia there were already vaccination options with the vaccine at the weekend.

The other federal states want to offer Novavax vaccinations in the course of the week.

The first deliveries of the preparation arrived last Thursday (February 24) at the Bundeswehr in Quakenbrück, Lower Saxony.

Delivery to the federal states finally began on Friday (February 25).

The state health ministers had spoken out in favor of initially offering the vaccine primarily to unvaccinated health care workers.

Because in the industry, the facility-related vaccination requirement will take effect from March 15th.

The vaccine was injected at the weekend, but also to people who were not prioritized.

The federal government hopes that the vaccine from the US manufacturer Novavax will give new impetus to the vaccination campaign in Germany.

The agent was approved as the fifth corona vaccine* in the EU - for people aged 18 and over.

Two doses are injected about three weeks apart.

It is a protein vaccine - so it is based on a different technology than the mRNA corona vaccines from Biontech*/Pfizer and Moderna* that have mostly been used up to now.
