Last month's winter monsoon was stronger and Hong Kong was far colder than normal

The Observatory said that because the winter monsoon affecting southern China was stronger than normal in February, Hong Kong was far colder than normal. It was cloudy with a few rain patches at the beginning of the month, and the weather was cold in the morning. Therefore, during the Lunar New Year period, the weather was icy and overcast for many days.

The first cold front of the Year of the Tiger was ushered in mid-month, and Hong Kong became cloudy and cooler with some rain and mist patches.

Under the influence of dry continental air currents, the weather on Valentine's Day on February 14 became generally fine and dry. With the strengthening of the easterly wind, the cloudiness increased on the Lantern Festival on February 15, and there was sunshine for part of the day.

In February, the urban area saw two cold fronts as low as 7.5 degrees

Another cold front struck in mid-to-late February. Under the influence of the associated strong winter monsoon and high-altitude disturbances, it turned cloudy, cold and rainy frequently. During this period, more than 150 mm of rainfall was generally recorded in Hong Kong.

Due to prolonged cold and rain, the temperature recorded by the Hong Kong Observatory on the morning of February 21 dropped to 7.5 degrees, the lowest of the month.

The Observatory issued a cold weather warning from February 18 to 25, which lasted for more than 6 days, and a frost warning was also issued during the period. Tai Mo Shan, the coldest in Hong Kong, once dropped to a low temperature of 0.2 degrees, but no frost was seen.

As the high-altitude disturbance receded, the weather became generally fine at the end of February. With the easing of the winter monsoon, the temperature gradually recovered. The temperature recorded by the Hong Kong Observatory on the afternoon of the last day rose to 22.5 degrees, the highest of the month.
