The free world, unanimously, rightly condemns the brutality and folly of the Russian intervention in Ukraine.
Faced with this war, which is as painful as it is inexcusable, the strongest responses are now legitimate.
Should this prevent us from thinking about our responsibilities?
Some think that everything can be explained by Putin's personality, his authoritarianism and his crazy dream of reconstituting Greater Russia.
I fear that things are no longer complicated, that moralizing anathemas, whatever their share of truth, prevent us from understanding the substance of the matter.
To begin with, we should have opposed, as Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel demanded, the promise made by NATO in 2008 to integrate Ukraine.
Instead, a major conference on security in Europe should be organised.
